Overview

An easy but interesting day can be had on this peak. This is a busy peak (as all the Lake District peaks are). There are many easy ways up but I would recommend ascending via Sharp Edge and descending by Hall's Fell Ridge.

The Route

Blencathra is situated north of the road and is a smooth peak with large ravines cut into the southern slopes by Blease Gill, Gate Gill, Doddick Gill and Scaley Beck. Follow the path heading east around the flank of the hill rising up to Mousethwaite Coombe and then north along the path in Glenderamackin valley.

A stream is reached which is followed up to Scales tarn over looked by the rocky ridge of Sharp Edge to the north. Climb sharply up to reach the ridge which is followed to the summit plateau. Blencathra is a now short walk .

To descend via hall's fell Rigde head south directly from the summit. For the best scrambling remain on the crest itself. There is a walkers path running alongside the rocks. Once the scrambling is over continue descending to the south to regain the road.

Getting There

Situated in the Lake District, England it can be reached by taking the A66 from either the M6 or Keswick. Parking can be found in Threlkeld or small lay-by near Scales.

When To Climb

Blencathra can be ascended at anytime of the year although it can get icy in the winter. Care should be taken on the ridges when wet and windy.

Both Sharp Edge and Hall's Fell Ridge are scrambles along exposed ridges. They become grade I climbs when in winter conditions.

Red Tape

None

Camping

There is accomodation in Keswick which is a very short drive away.
