Overview
Mt. Toby is a classic in the Conneticut Region of Massachusetts. The mountain is very similiar to that of many other smaller 1000 foot mountains in this region. Mount Toby can be reached by a class 1 hiking trail that varies from moderate to steeper terrain to the summit. The view from this summit is rather poor because of the fact that the fire tower's view is blocked on all side by forest. There is a loop hike on Mt. Toby that connect it's summit to southern neighbor Roaring Mountain, which also doesn't have much in views.

Getting There
From Previous Page Owner Several Trailheads exist. The two main entrances are on Reservation road which is the main trail to the summit and the Roaring Brook trail which intersects with the main summit trail.
The entrance to the main trail which leads up to the fire tower is on Reservation Road in Sunderland. The recomended entrance is following the Roaring Brook trail (see directions) until it intersects with the main trail and following the wide path all the way to the summit/fire lookout.
To get to the Roaring Brook trail from Amherst, MA, take route 63 north for about 5-8 miles, looking on the left side of the road for a sign that says "Guru Ramdas Ashram". There is a small parking lot with a trail head. From here it is 4 miles round trip to the summit and a half mile to the start of the waterfalls.

The parking area suggested above is on private land - the property owners maintain a small parking lot to accomodate hikers and request a $1 donation. The trail head is directly adjacent to the parking lot.
When To Climb
From Previous Page Owner A great day-hike mountain for all seasons. Foliage is great in the fall and the waterfalls are prime in the spring. The views from the top are pnaoramic and on a clear day, you can see Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire. I have climbed it in winter without snow shoes, but your milage may vary if the snow is deep. Several sites mention people using this trail for back country skiing in the winter time.
Camping
Camping is not permitted on the Mount Toby reservation.
