Overview

This unknown peak is one of the better mountains of acclimatization of the zone of the trekking of Santa Cruz. It's locating between two big colossuses, Paria and Artesonraju, and the always amazing presence of nearby Taulliraju and for this reason the landscape is really beautiful. The name of this peak, contemplated by many hikers from Taullipampa, does not appear in the habitual maps as Alpenvereinskarte 0/3a, but the small canyon on the one that is found is called Quebrada Sentilo and thus appears in the catalogue of mountains of the Cordillera Blanca. The height registered in the peak list of Cordillera Blanca is 5100 meters that coincides with it registered by me with my GPS in the summit in July of 2004 (5097 meters).
According with the peruvians of the area the actual name is Cerro Sentilo and the older name Nevado Sentilo it's not possible since the glaciers abandoned this mountain in the last 20 years and the snow no longer covers it (only some months of the year after snowfall), what has become a rocky pyramid. The climb requires a very easy rock-climb (degree I) in the final part that is not exposed.
This peak is a good option to make the first 5000 meters in Cordillera Blanca after the 3 days of trek to reach Taullipampa.

Getting There

The Santa Cruz Trek is the most classic trek of Cordillera Blanca, for more information about this trek you must to consult the page of Taulliraju

Day 1 (approach):
Approach to Cashapampa from Huaraz

Generally you can take a collective or contract the trek with some agence of trekkings for this (with cook, guide, muleteers and donkeys). The road to Caraz is asfalt but after this village the road is a track to Cashapampa (2900m). In Cashapampa you can contract muleteers (arrieros) with donkeys to take your baggage.
You must camp in the places signaled for the National Park of Huascaran.

Day 1 (walk):
Cashapampa-Llamacorral (3750m)

The beginning is easy with a nice path near the river to reach the upper plain of Llamacorral. 4h.

Day 2:
Llamacorral-Taullipampa (4350m)

The stage most comfortable in slope (great pampa) enjoying of the views of Nevados (Caraz, Agujas, Abasraju, Curicashajana, Rinrijirca) and the lakes (Itchicocha and Jatuncocha). In the crossroads of Quisuar generally it’s a good idea to climb a short trail near the basecamp of Alpamayo to enjoy of the views of Quitaraju and Alpamayo (some people make this the next day and they go to the basecamp and return to Taullipampa). 5-6h

Day 3:
Sentilo (5100m)

Climb and descend with a new night in Taullipampa.

Days 4 and 5
Generally the people follow the trekking for two days, to Huaripampa and finally Vaqueria to return to Huaraz.

Red Tape

Fees of 20$ to entry in National Park of Huascaran (year 2004), pay in Huaraz or with the guides companys.

When To Climb

(June) July and August (september).
The best eppoch in the tropic is the "dry" in july and august. In june is possible the snow and in september is possible some rains. July and august is the most secure but september is a good month. June is changing, posibility of snowfall or cold days.
In my trip of 2004 in june and the first days of July the climbs was impossibles in Cordillera Blanca for the snowfall, very cold days, rain... but the weather was very good in rest of july, august and september. Excellent for trekking and glacier-climbs.

Camping

Camping allowed in the signaled areas (Llamacorral, Taullipampa, Huaripampa). Not huts, not fees, not rangers,...really is a natural park but nobody watches you in Cordillera Blanca.

Mountain Conditions

Generally the months of july and august are dry (not rain) with a good temperature in the day (t-shirt, shorts,...) but it's very cold in the late afternoon and the night (really it's winter time in Perú but it's a tropical zone). You must to take the sleeping bag for winter and cold clothing (polar jacket, gloves,...).

Map

The best map: Alpenvereinskarte 0/3a, map of Cordillera Blanca North, 1: 100.000. The peak don't appear with name but the route of Quebrada Sentilo from Taullipampa is signaled. It can see the line-level of 5100 meters in the little summit.

Children

Children

Children refers to the set of objects that logically fall under a given object. For example, the Aconcagua mountain page is a child of the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits.' The Aconcagua mountain itself has many routes, photos, and trip reports as children.
