Overview

Mount Jenkins is located along the Pacific Crest Trail between Morris Peak and Owens Peak in the Sequoia National Forest.

Mount Jenkins was named by the BLM and USFS in 1983 for James Charles Jenkins (1952-79), USFS Forester and Sierra trail guide author. If you hike from Walker Pass north along the PCT you will see the Mount Jenkin's Dedicaton Plaque.

On many years in the spring the wildflowers in this area of Sequoia National Forest are beautiful.

Getting There

Take SR 14 to Mojave. Continue north on SR 14 to the intersection with SR 178 (Freeman Junction). Go west about 8 miles on SR 178 to Walker Pass. Park here. The elevation at Walker Pass is 5246 feet above sea level.

This parking spot is where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses SR 178. One of the ways of getting to Mount Jenkins is by hiking north along the Pacific Crest Trail from Walker Pass.

Red Tape

There isn't much red tape. You don't need a permit to hike along the PCT in the Mount Jenkins area.

A California campfire permit is required if you intend to have a campfire. Permits are available from BLM, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and California Department of Forestry offices. The Pacific Crest Trail is for hiking, backpacking and equestrian use only -- no bicycles or motorized vehicles are permitted.

Camping

Walker Pass Trailhead/Campground located just west of Walker Pass on State Highway 178. There is drinking water from spring through fall. Eleven sites are walk-in sites for Pacific Crest Trail hikers and tent campers while two sites have a parking spur for vehicles.

Chimney Creek Campground is a semi-rustic campground with non-potable water because of the area's naturally occurring uranium. The campground is located on Canebrake Road off State Highway 178, but hikers would access it from the Pacific Crest Trail (1/4 mile off the trail and marked by a sign).
