 Beautiful glow on Muttler |
Muttler is beautiful pyramid-shaped mountain which holds the honor to be the highest of the Samnaun-gruppe. It was climbed for the first time in 1858. With its impressive 3294 meter it is an important landmark in the area of the village of Samnaun (Switzerland).
Although Muttler lays just over the border in Switserland, most of the Samnaungruppe is situated on the Austrian site of the border (Towards Ischl and Serfaus). Muttler is very popular for climbing, because the top can be reached in summer without ropes, so with only the need of good hiking shoes and a reasonable endurance level you can get up to almost 3300 meters!
These kind of mountains are not too common, so this and because of it looks makes it a really attractive mountain for hikers/climbers.Muttler is also known to be the ‘home mountain’ of the Samnaun-village from where the mountain can be climbed best.
From the village there is no way around Muttler, it rises high above the other peaks. This also gives you the strong need to get out and climb it, which is definitely worth the effort, because the views are great. You can see towards the Oetztal area, Ortlergruppe, Bernina Alps and of course the other peaks of the Samnaun-Gruppe.

How to get to Samnaun
From within Switzerland
One reaches Samnaun on the Engadiner route: via the Vereina Tunnel in winter or the Flüela Pass in summer, road junction Vinadi to Samnaun.
If you are traveling to Samnaun from within Switzerland, you require a valid travel document (passport, Identity card) as in Martina you have to pass through Swiss Customs and could be stopped for a customs check, because Samnaun is a duty-free area.
From Austria
One reaches Samnaun over the Inn valley road: via Landeck as far as Pfunds, branch off at Kajetans Bridge, then via Spiss to Samnaun.

Getting to the TopThe starting point for this route is the village of Samnaun.(1800m) Start your route just by walking in the direction of the mountain. You will automatically come on a marked route, which leads straight to the mountain.
This route goes through the Maisas valley where the route starts to become a little bit steeper in comparison with the start in Samnaun. In this valley you can see, if you’re lucky, marmottes. The route stays relatively easy in this part of the ascent.
You follow the path until you eventually come to a split-up of the road. The path which goes to the right goes to Stammersjoch, so you have to take a left. From this point the route get’s a little steeper and is headed towards the top. During the climb you pass a little lake with red water: the Rooten Seeli. (The water gets this color from Algae).
This part that goes straight to the top will cost you about 4 hours of climbing/hiking. At the top there is the possibility to take another route down, just follow the path over the top and on the other side the path goes down again, which eventually comes out on the path to Stammersjoch, which you follow down to get down to the split-up where you passed by on the way up.
The last part back to Samnaun therefore is the same path you took leaving Samnaun to the top. The time you need is about 7,5 hours for this trip.

What to take + When to climbAs already said, Muttler is a relatively easy 3000-er. Ropes and climbing-degrees etc. are not necessary. If you got any experience with hiking in the Alps or other mountain ranges, it’s doable to reach the top. Just wear good hiking-shoes and make sure you have a reasonable endurance level. Although climbing the mountain isn’t too hard, do watch out for loose stones on the upper side of the mountain!
Best time for climbing Muttler is the summer months (june,july,august), but winter (skiing) ascents can also be done, for those climbs it’s advisable to take a guide (from Samnaun)

There are plenty of hotels where you can stay in the village of Samnaun. Samnaun is a well-know winter sport village and therefore holds a lot of hotels.
