OverviewOxford Peak is the highest point in the Bannock Mountains. This gentle mountain is located in southeast Idaho just east of the town of Malad City on Interstate 15. Oxford Peak is located in the Caribou National Forest, and is the highest point in Oneida County. With an elevation of 9,282', Oxford Peak ranks way down on the Idaho elevation list. But the new field of Prominence has made Oxford Peak a more important mountain. With a prominence of 4,002', Oxford Peak is big enough to make an impressive appearance on the Idaho Prominence Map.
Getting ThereFrom the small town of Clifton on State Highway 23, locate First South Street one block south of the Post Office. This is also known as Forest Road 045. Drive to the end of this road, which is about 6.4 miles long. The first half of the road is in good condition, but the last half is rough in places. You will need a high-clearance vehicle to make it all the way in. You will pass through two unlocked gates before dropping down into the Davis Basin. You will park when you reach the trailhead sign at the bottom of Davis Basin. The elevation here is about 6,880'.
