Overview

Heliograph Peak is only a sub-peak in the remote Pinaleno Mountains in southeast Arizona. But it offers an easy hike to the top, and great views of the surrounding area. It seems to be a fine vantage point for the lookout and the communication facilities on top. My guidebook, Arizona Travelers Handbook, by Bill Weir and Robert Blake, a Moon Travel Handbook, gave me the idea and information to do this peak.

Getting There

The signed Swift Trail highway, AZ 366, leaves U.S. 191 about 7 miles south of Safford, and 24 miles north of Interstate 10. The paved, winding road climbs through scenic forests, with occasional vistas looking back to the east. About 27 miles up, the road turns to gravel and is gated here in the winter. Back a few yards is the campground and unsigned side road up to the peak. There's room for about ten cars, here, to park.

This gated road leads about 2 miles to the top, and passes small aspen groves on the way. You'll see the towers on top as you get close to the top. The grade is gentle, and it is steady walking. This might makes for a relatively easy ski tour, with a constant angle of ascent that many cross-country skiers might like.

There are no junctions to side track off, and it took me about an hour to hike to the top.

Red Tape

Seems permission is free and access allowable. Be mindful that it is a communications facility, and please respect the property.

Camping

There looks like some campgrounds on the highway, with lodging in Safford and Willcox. A nearby state park, Roper Lake, may offer some low camping.

"We have nothing against the practice slopes and the standard runs, but if that's all you know, you've missed something special; something lost beyond the ranges, a glistening new white world with its hard edges covered over for the winter, and you its discoverer."   --Dave Brower
