Bullwinkle Tower is one of the squat towers in the Garden of Eden area of Arches National Park, UT. With two short routes, it is a fun climb to do if there are parties on the nearby (and much more popular) Owl Rock.

Getting There

Arches National Park is just a few miles North of Moab on US 191. The tower itself is about ten miles from the park entrance. Eight or nine miles on the main park road will bring you to the turnoff to the Windows Area, which is a right hand turn. The Garden of Eden is another mile or so down this road, with a well-marked turnout on the left.

From the parking area, Bullwinkle is several hundred yards South (although not visible). Owl Rock is prominently visible, about 25 yards away. Bullwinkle is directly behind Owl Rock, so if you hike toward and past Owl Rock, you cannot miss Bullwinkle.

Red Tape

Arches is a National Park, so National Park entrance fees (Currently $10/vehicle for seven days) and other regulations apply. Dogs are allowed only on leashes and only on pavement.

Check at the Park Visitor Center with the Parks Service for current climbing regulations. At times, other towers are closed for raptor nesting. This has not been a problem with Bullwinkle in the past, but it is always best to check.

New bolting is prohibited, as is the use of "hammer-aid." Please refer to the park's climbing section of their .website.

Watch out for cryptobiotic soil crusts. Please stick to slickrock and/or existing trails.

Camping

Car camping in designated campsites only ($10 per night). Backcountry permits are also available. Check the NPS website for more information.

Camping in Arches (and Moab itself) can fill up very quickly, especially on the weekends. Free camping in the area can be found on BLM lands in Castle Valley, Kane Creek, in Tusher Canyon (N. of Moab 10-15 miles), and a few other places.
