San Juan Range Overview

The San Juan Range is the largest mountain range in Colorado. It dominates southwestern Colorado. In Colorado, the San Juans are second in snowfall only to the Park Range. The San Juan Range is home to 342 peaks above thirteen thousand feet.

13164 Overview

13164 is located 1.3 miles south-southwest of the centennial thirteener, Half Peak. These peaks are found between the Rio Grande River and the upper Lake Fork of the Gunnison River. 13164 is the 511th highest peak in the state and the 64th highest peak residing on the Continental Divide in Colorado. 13164 is most easily accessed via Cuba Gulch and is commonly linked with climbs of Half Peak. In fact, climbing 13164 in conjunction with Half Peak adds only 384 feet of elevation gain and no significant distance. The difficulty never exceeds class 2. The summit provides good views of Half Peak and its south ridge.

Getting There

Drive 2.2 miles south on CO 149 from the bridge that crosses Henson Creek in downtown Lake City, CO. Turn right onto Lake San Cristobal Road. Turn left onto Sherman Road (CR 35) at mile 14.3. A four-wheel drive vehicle is required past mile 15.5. At mile 18.0, cross Boulder Creek and reach the Cuba Gulch Trailhead at mile 18.9. There is a sign indicating the Cuba Gulch Trail on the south side of the road at 10,700 feet.

Hike south on the Cuba Gulch trail and almost immediately cross Cottonwood Creek. There is a log to aid in the crossing. Continue 1.6 miles south on the Cuba Gulch Trail to an indistinct fork. Hike up the southeast fork to the 13164-12990 saddle on the Continental Divide. Hike west along the Continental Divide to the summit of 13164.
