Overview"Castleabra," while not officially named, is one of Colorado's 200 tallest peaks. (Specifically, the 105th tallest peak.) This distinction means that this peak is seldom climbed, especially on its own. It is usually climbed in combination with Castle Peak.
Due to the rotten Elk Range rock, there is no easy way to summit Castleabra, although none of the routes are especially difficult either.
Getting ThereDepending on the route to be taken, "Castleabra" can be approached from several directions, each with its own trailhead.
The west face and ridge are best approached from Conundrum Hot Springs, which are 8 miles south of Conundrum Creek Trailhead.
The south face from Cumberland Basin approaches from Middle Brush Creek Trailhead.
The east ridge from Castle Peak involves climbing Castle Peak first, so it depends which route is used to ascend Castle Peak, although Castle Creek Trailhead is the most common.
Directions to each of these trailheads is appropriately documented
Red TapeApproaching from Conundrum Creek Trailhead traverses the Maroon Bells/Snowmass Wilderness, and requires a permit freely available at the trailhead.
As far as I know, there are no other legal requirements to climb "Castleabra."
CampingIf approaching from the West, the best campsite is at Conundrum Hot Springs. If you have additional information of other campsite--regardless of approach--please let me know. Images
