Overview This is an old and forested cinder cone with solitude and outstanding views. When you look north you can see a plateau, Fairfield peak, Cinder cone, Prospect peak and more. There is a good chance that this is what Cinder cone and the lava beds will look like in a few thousand years or less. This butte is just east of the PCT and just north of the trail from Juniper Lake. To the east you can see Lassen and all that other stuff. The butte is about 4 miles from the Juniper Lake trailhead but requires a steep off trail hike on loose but tree covered cinder to get to the top.
If you are looking for a 3-4 day trip, than you might want to take your pack and camp on the west rim of the mountain. From Crater Butte you can hike north across the Plateau and than to cinder cone (about 14 miles round trip).
This mountain offers many wonderful opportunities but is over- looked for the reason that it requires what would appear as too much effort but is really worth it.
Getting There Take I-5 South from Redding to Red Bluff. At Red Bluff take 36 East to Chester Where there is a road leading into the Park. Go on that road to a gravel road that goes to Juniper Lake Campground. Go on this Road to the end where there is a trail that goes to the PCT and continues on past it. Get off on the east side of the mountain, go around to thea north side and ascend.
Red TapeA widerness permit is required for overnight trips. You need a park entry permit even for a day hike, which costs money for entry to the park (a Golden Eagle Pass or Lassen and Whiskeytown Annual pass may be used for park entry).
Camping The wesern rim of the mountain is as good as any place for sleeping. there is a small pool in the crater that will provide enough water to survive. It's also possible to camp on the plateau north of it.Essential Gear Standard wilderness equiptment (including map, compass, food, water, filter, stove, Lots and Lots and Lots and Lots of Deet, etc.). Lots of Dark Chocolate is also a good idea. Images
