Overview

Located one mile northwest of Hayden Pass, Mount Fromme is another of the five peaks (w/ Wellesley Peak, Sentinel Peak, Lost Peak, and Mount Claywood) which encircle the head of the Dosewallips River valley. Just to the north is Mount Claywood, highest of these peaks, separated from Fromme by a sculpted depression in which beautiful Claywood Lake is nestled. To the southeast streches a moderate ridge down to Hayden Pass which divides Mount Fromme from its close neighbor to the southeast, scenic Sentinel Peak. The trio of peaks along with Claywood Lake make for a great outing and the spectacular views are sure to please.

Mount Fromme was named for Rudo L. Fromme, an early supervisor (1913-1926)of Olympic National Forest.("Olympic Mountains, Climbing Guide" 4th ed. by Olympic Mountain Rescue, pg. 102)

Getting There

Mount Fromme and the peaks that surround the headwaters of the North Fork Dosewallips are most often accessed via the Dosewallips River Trail. The trail is 15.5 miles just to get to Hayden Pass. Add an additional 5.5 miles on account of the perennial Dosewallips Road washout and you have a quite a considerable hike in.

Red Tape

Obtain a backcountry permit at the Dosewallips River trailhead. Technically speaking, this should cost you $5/person and 2$/person/night.

Camping

Standard camp for Mount Fromme and its surrounding environs is made at Dose Meadow, 2.3 miles by trail from Hayden Pass, but other options exist. The shores of Claywood Lake are generally hard and sloped and not suitable for camping.
