Overview

Any pictures of and around the Pyramid Buttes are greatly appreciated.

The Pyramid Buttes are located on the ridge between the North and South Fork of Sweeney Creek. Views to the north are of Sweeney Peak and Lolo Peak and to the south of mountain such as the Heavenly Twins. Sweeney creek is a popular summer destination for many hikers from Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley and the area offers numerous opportunities for the adventurous.

Getting There

Sweeney Creek Ridge Trailhead

From Missoula, drive south on Highway 93 to 1.5 miles south of Florence and turn right (west) onto Sweeney Creek Loop. Follow the signs to the trailhead which is about 7 miles up the road. Sweeney Creek is popular in the summer and parking space is limited so arrive early if you want a good parking spot.

The hike up the Sweeney Ridge trail crosses a spring and several snowmelt drainages. Open meadows give great views of the Pyramid Buttes and Peterson Lake. Follow the trail past Peterson Lake if you are attempting the Buttes.

It looks like there is a route up the northeast face, but I have not tried it. A large couloir on the northwest side of the mountain is fun when there is snow. I imagine it goes without snow although loose rock might become an issue.

Red Tape

The trail enters the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area at 2.7 miles; all wilderness restrictions apply.

Camping

Climbers may wish to car-camp at the trailhead and get an early start or they can hike up the trail to one of the lakes. Depending on the snow pack, the lakes may be snowed in, but Peterson Lake usually has some camping sites by early to mid June. The lakes are in the official Wilderness Area so all wilderness restrictions apply. No permits are needed, but arrive early for a good camping spot.
