OverviewRanger Peak overlooks Big Lake, one of the largest backcountry lakes in the Bitterroot Mountains. It sits on the Montana-Idaho border and is one of the last rocky Bitterroot Peaks if you're heading West. In the summer, Big Creek and the south fork of Big Creek are popular backpacking destinations. The drainage is also well used by horse riders and packers. In the winter, dedicated backcountry skiers can take face shots in the large, open bowl southeast of Ranger Peak.
Getting ThereFrom Missoula, MT, drive south on Highway 93 to 5.5 miles past Stevensville. Turn right (west) at Bell Crossing which has a flashing yellow light. Follow the signs for the Big Creek Trailhead which is 4.5 miles from the turnoff. From the trailhead, hike up the well maintained Big Creek trail. The larger stream crossings have nice bridges built across them, but the trail still has wet sections during Spring. About 7 miles up the trail, go right as it splits with the south fork of Big Creek.
Red TapeThe trail enters the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness after a couple miles; all wilderness restrictions apply. The Big Creek trail is well used by horses so be prepared for possible horse encounters. I have seen black bears on the trail so hanging your food is strongly encouraged.
CampingEstablished campsites with picnic tables and fire pits exist at the Big Creek trailhead. There are also a handful of well-used campsites along the trail. Big Lake offers picturesque campsites right on the lake. These are heavily used, please do your best to minimize your impact. External LinksNOAA Weather
