The Gehrenspitze is part of the Wetterstein mountain range. Please note that there is more than one Gehrenspitze in the Alps, most notably a lower, identically named peak in the Tannheimer Alps.
The peak stands apart from the main southern ridge of the Wetterstein and hence offers a spectacular view of the mountains such as the Scharnitzspitze, Schlüsselkarspitze and Öfelekopf. Whereas the southern side of the Gehrenspitze slopes somewhat gently to the peak the northern side is marked by some steep cliffs and walls.

Getting There

Starting points for the hike are all in the Leutasch valley, which can be easily reached via Mittenwald (Germany) or Scharnitz (Austria).

Routes and Maps

From Klamm via Wang Alm
Starting in Leutasch Klamm a forest trail follows the Klammbach past the Wetterstein Haus towards the Wang Alm. From there the marked path leads towards the Scharnitzjoch (2048m). In the western ridge the path then leads towards the peak.
Through the Puitbachtal
Starting in Leutasch Lehner enter the Puitbach valley. The path zig-zags first the Forest quite close to the Puitbach. Once beyond the forest, it is a beautiful Almweg, running through the grassy valley, the Gehrenspitze looming in the south, Öfelekopf, Schlüsselkarspitze, and Scharnitzspitze enclosing it in the north. Follow the path all the way to the Scharnitzjoch. From here, it follows the same path as above.
From Leutasch-Gasse via Lehner Berg
In Leutasch-Gasse, follow the road from Seefeld until it ends in a parking space (for a nearby hotel). There you will see some stone steps leading into the forest. Follow them and you will find a barely visible path through the forest of the Lehner Berg slightly bending to the west. At around a height of 1450m the path will run into a gully full of rubble. Follow that gully until you reach the tip of the eastern flank. Along the flank there is a visible path onto to the peak.
As of summer 2008 the path has been officially abandoned, that is all markings have been painted over and trees block the path at times in the forest. Use the few Steinmandl for orientation.
