Overview

This crag is the major buttress that forms Fir Draw's eastern side, and is part of Ontario Peak. The crag can support some relatively short trad climbs and scrambles. Excellent views and exposure add to the wild feel of the crag.

Getting There

Fir Draw is the canyon to the east of Falling Rock Canyon. Continue up Icehouse Canyon Trail past Falling Rock Canyon (which splits Sugarloaf Peak from Ontario Peak), and move into the mouth of the next canyon (Fir Draw).

The crag is visible as a small, wide 'spire', from the trail, and is on the left/east side of Fir Draw. Head up straight towards the crag, through the brush, staying up and out of the canyon itself. You will eventually come to the base of the crag, covered in moss.

One can descend best by moving down into Fir Draw, which may require a rappel depending on which small draw you head down. Once in Fir Draw itself, no special equipment is required. Staying on the western side of the canyon helps avoid the thick and impossible brush, poison oak, and other vines of the eastern side where there is often running water.

Red Tape

If entering the Cucamonga Wilderness, a permit is required. These can be obtained from the Baldy Visitor's Center, in Baldy Village. These permits are not required if one does not go into the wilderness area.

Special Gear

The author suggests a basic canyoneering/rappel kit for any adventures in the immediate area, especially if weather is expected. There are many small escape canyons off the ridge, but one can quickly run into terrain requiring a rappel.

As always, a helmet is highly suggested regardless of activity.
