3702 - ScrambleWhack3702 is a small peak in the San Gabriel Wilderness, south of Twin Peaks. If you like bushwhacking and some scrambling, plus some cool views of untouched backcountry stuff, this peak is for you.
The basic route is easy to follow. There is no trail. It's a bushwhack up top with the general 'hard parts' being class 3, loose gravel and granite. One can surmount a couple portions for some fun class 4 moves.
The summit is very brushy, but has awesome views of Twin Peaks to the north.
Judging by the SG River close to the road, one should not forget their Krylon at home. It's important to sign the rocks and road with your gang name. Gotta rep Azusa, yo. Oh, and a trekking pole with adjustable length really helps on the hike, so you don't eat gravel. Long pants and long sleeves are a good idea if you don't want to get cut up real bad by the chaparral.
General DirectionsYou'll want to park at the West Fork parking lot. This is on either (both) sides of the first bridge on the West Fork of the San Gabriel River.
From there, hike west along the closed road to Lower Bear Creek. Cross that first bridge, and get onto the trail that crosses underneath it. Head north.
 Some classy moves |
Hike north for a while. Soon enough, you'll see 3702 above and to the left. You want to get into the gully that goes up the east side of the peak, gaining the south ridge of 3702. The rest is insanely simple: just hike up the gully, gain the ridge, take the ridge north until you run out of 'up'. Done. Reverse to go home.External LinksSGMDF Images
