Day Outing With a Scramble

Unnamed peak due south of Lower Morgan Lake in the John Muir Wilderness is seldom climbed as evidenced with the registry placed in August of 1980 by the Sierra Club with less than three dozen entries. On June 26, 2009 at 0930, I started out from the Mosquito Flat trail head at the end of Rock Creek Rd. and trailed up to Morgan Pass. After following Morgan Creek to the middle lake I turned towards an obvious saddle to the south across a field of boulders. This has been the first day in some time that we did not have afternoon thunderstorms so there was no hurry to return. Following a ridge from the saddle east over rock scree and up some chutes I arrived at the summit at 1300. From there the mountain is surrounded by all its bigger brothers: Mt. Morgan, Broken Finger Pk and Mt. Starr to the north, Mt. Tom to the east, Mt. Julius Caesar to the south, Mt. Abbot, Mt. Dade and Bear Creek Spire to the west. Reversing my route got me to the trail head by 1530. I estimate the trip was approximately twelve miles and a moderate workout.

Getting There

The trail head is at the west end of Rock Creek Rd. which runs 9 miles west off of US 395 at Tom's Place (about 24 miles north of Bishop). There is plenty of parking at the Forestry Service maintained campground with overflow spaces less than a quarter mile from the road end.
