Overview

The westernmost ridge of the Akarnarian mountains is the Serekas range. This is the steepest ridge as the mountains extend from the Ionian sea to 1100 meters. The towns of Paleros and Mutikas flank the western ridges.

Serekas range runs in a north/south direction. It is 10 miles long and contains several peaks with expansive views of the Ionian Sea to the west. The island of Lefkada is visible to the immediate west. To the southwest is visible Ithaki island (Ithaca) and Kefallonia island. To the north Epirus is visible. To the east, the Akarnarian mountains rise with Misovouni, Psili Korfi and Perganti rising.

Snowfall is common on the highest peaks from December to March. However, due to Serekas close proximity to the sea the snow melts quickly.

The views from the summit are amazing and this mountain is worth climbing.

Getting There

Serekas can be reached by driving to Paleros and Mutikas and also Kandila.

From Athens, Paleros is best accessed by bus. The main bus station is in Kifissos. From there, take the "AITOLOAKARNANIA" bus that stops by Vonitsa. From there take a taxi to Paleros which is 15 minutes away.

Paleros
Paleros has a population of 3000. It is a tourist location with many hotels and resorts. The Ionian sea blankets the town and offers a variety of activities, such as swimming, windsurfing, jetskiing, and spearfishing (get a permit) from the coast guard.

Serekas mountain lies to the east of Paleros. To access the saddle drive south on the national highway for about 10 minutes. Then, on the left hand side a sign will appear saying "AYIOS DIMIRIOS". This is a monastery which has at least 30 rooms and some nuns as well. This is a great staging point for a long hike in the mountains. From here, the mountain is all yours.

Kandila

Kandila is a small town on the east flank of the Serekas range. From Paleros, head south for 30 minutes until the town of Mutikas is reached. From here, stay on the national road until a sign appears for Kandila. It is 5 kilometers from this point until Kandila. When in the town square, signs will direct you towards "AYIA PARASKEVI". Stay on the ashplault road until there is a fork in the road. Merge left until the road is too messy for the car. There is plently of room to park on either side of the road and from here take the road straight for the saddle which is visible. From the saddle head west and the peak is 1.5 miles away.

Red Tape

No red tape. Just beware of the sheepard dogs.
