Overview

Peak 9622 or "Shingle Mill North" is a bonus peak if you are planning on climbing Shingle Mill Peak or even Freedom Peak. All three peaks make for a fine traverse. Both Freedom and Shingle Mill have recently been officially named but this little peak with 322 feet of prominence isn't likely to get an official name.

Getting There

Dry Fork Canyon Trail Drive up Provo Canyon looking for a sign for Squaw Peak Road. Follow this narrow paved road until it splits. A sign points to the right for a city view overlook. Go left, road becomes gravel shortly after. Follow this road to Rock Creek Campground. About a mile beyond, a trail will take off to the left. This should be signed Dry Fork Canyon Trail. There is parking for about 5 cars. Big Springs Trail For the Big Springs Trail, take Hwy 189 up Provo Canyon, but rather than exiting at the Squaw Peak Trail continue east to Vivian Park, located approximately 2 miles further up the Provo Canyon. Vivian Park is located at the head of the Great Western Trail (road). Drive up the Great Western Trail about 4 miles south to the Big Springs Park. Park in the last (west most) parking lot. The trail starts from the northwest corner of the parking lot. The trailhead has an elevation of 5130 ft. The distance from the parking lot to the saddle between the Shingle Mills is just under 5 miles.

Dry Fork Canyon Route

Hike the Dry Fork trail 3.5 miles to a sign (that was on the ground) just before the ridgeline. Take a right and the trail switchbacks up to the ridge and starts dropping down the other side several hundred feet to a saddle. During this decent, the trail disappears. I met some hikers coming up this trail from the Provo Canyon side and we both were bushwhacking wondering where the trail went. Find the trail again at the saddle at 9,300 feet. From the saddle, a small climbers trail goes north up to the summit of this minor peak. I placed a register to help motivate anyone considering this side trip.
