This is the "sand" that gives...
This is the "sand" that gives Sand Mountain its name, and is on the east face. Since the mountain is volcanic, I assume it is made of some kind of ash or tuff?? Maybe a geologist could answer.

Tuff is 'welded' ash that forms out of a pyroclastic flow. The rock texture is fine grained and made up of particles of pumice, obsidian and rhyolite. I would need to look at a hand sample to be sure though. If you look close, tuff has tiny specks of black volcanic glass (obsidian) throughout.
