The Punta della Vallaccia...

The Punta della Vallaccia...

The Punta della Vallaccia north-western pillar. To its left is the scree couloir which leads up to Forcella Vallaccia. This actually is the best route if you have to leave the cirque to the south. We tried some gullies to its left but ended up doing some UIAA III climbing high above lose scree. Naturally without any climbing equipment. July 13th 2005

Difficulty of the scree couloir

This may seem like an odd question to probably an experienced climber. I have admired your contributions to SummitPost. I was browsing pictures of areas I have visited (not nearly enough) and realised that your view of Sassolonngo/platto is very similar in space AND time to one of mine I have posted. Anyway, I reached about this point shown here as a humble rambler on the first day of five in the area and turned round (on a warm sunny day), thinking the unknowns in the scree couloir and beyond might put too much strain on my knees: was I right? I would then have followed the path round anticlockwise back eventually to Vigo.
My knees aren't as strong now, but my determination has improved. Perhaps, expenses permitting, I may return and complete the walk some day.
Happy hiking.

Re: Difficulty of the scree couloir

It's not that difficult but very steep. You need to keep moving not to slide back. Our problem was that we got lost to the left of the couloir and then had some real scary climbing to do.
