Start of Trip over Echo Col (12,400+'), August 28, 1980

This SPS trip started from Lake Sabrina with several hardened peak baggers. We forced our paces to reach base camp in the Ionian Basin the same day. Echo Col (12,400+') was to lead us over the Sierra Crest. Our leaders were great navigators, perhaps with previous experience. Please do note: 1980 was a heavier snow year!

Past one of the lakes, we scrambled cross-country toward the Col. Beautiful lakes made for quick photos or looks as we sped past them.

Coming to Echo Lake, we were slightly agasp as the difficulty looked harder than class 3. But that's the way all our trip objectives appeared on this activity!

We did Mt. McDuffie, Black Giant, Charybdis, and the Hermit. Our last day, we chose Hungry Packer Pass to get back to the cars. A five day trip over Labor Day weekend.

Photos of this portion of this set of climbs may help deciding to choose this route, or navigating over Echo Col.

"We have nothing against the practice slopes and the standard runs, but if that's all you know, you've missed something special; something lost beyond the ranges, a glistening new white world with its hard edges covered over for the winter, and you its discoverer."   --Dave Brower
