Pilot Butte (4,138') Sunset July 1, 1998The main reason I like Bend, OR, so much is the sunset I viewed on July 1, 1998. After coming into town, I had heard about this evening hike op, so drove over to the city parking lot, all paved and quite accessible, and started my short hike to the top of this butte. It was raining a bit, so I had my nylon jacket on. I took my tripod, I think, as I hoped for a good sunset, then some city night shots.
My dreams were fulfilled. On this, the second of my short vacation days, I was to be well rewarded photographically. A double rainbow appeared and the low evening light cast itself over the town. With Kodachrome, I snapped away. I had the foresight to snap my own photo, and waited and waited for the best light. One of the most beautiful light shows I have ever had atop a mountain, well, butte. With the digital gear I have nowdays, I would have snapped over 200 images. But with film at about 14 cents a slide, I had to be sparing.
You can see many of the Cascade summits from this point. All the way from Mt. McLoughlin to Mt. Hood! A sighter helps place what peak is which. I hiked this butte the next evening, too, but the sky show wasn't as good. I returned in 1999, but the sunsets this good aren't always forthcoming.External LinksEastern Oregon and Northern North California Loop June 30 to July 4, 1998 Images
