Approach
From the Slavonia trailhead, head up the Gold Creek Trail. Cross the creek at 1.5 miles and continue for one more mile to Gold Creek Lake. Follow the trail for an additional mile to a meadow at 9800 feet.
Route Description
From the meadow at 9800 feet, summer hikers will want to follow the obvious trail as it makes its way north to an intersection with the Red Dirt Pass trail at 10,080 feet. Follow the trail as it makes its way up into the basin at the head of the creek and ascend to Red Dirt Pass. (Some trail braiding seems to be going on here. Don't cut the switchbacks.) From Red Dirt Pass the summit is one mile to the northeast. Some minor boulder hopping is required for the last hundred feet.
Depending on snow conditions, it may be wiser to follow the creek and a sketchy trail from the meadow at 9800 feet to the basin below Red Dirt Pass.
16 miles and 3700 feet elevation gain.
Essential Gear
No special gear needed for summer trips. If there is a significant amount of snow up high an ice axe would be a good idea. Short slides lead to deadly cliffs. Winter trips would call for snowshoes or skis and avalanche gear.
