Approach

From Grapevine Ranger Station, drive west 5.2 miles to Ubehebe Crater. From Ubehebe Crater, drive south for 10.5 miles past where the pavement ends heading toward The Racetrack. Park at about elevation 4,800 feet along the side of the road.

Route Description

From Racetrack Road any of the ridges or washes on the west side of Tin Mountain may be climbed to the summit. The hike is steep until the summit ridge is reached. From the summit ridge hike northeast to the summit. I've attached the map and waypoints I set out with, but we ended up going more directly between waypoints 1 and 5, but we did follow the route on the map more or less on the way down. If you can pick it up there is a use trail at least part of the way.

Trip Statistics: 4,200 feet elevation gain (rather steep in places). Approximately 7 miles round-trip. The hike takes from 7 to 10 hours depending on your speed. It took us 8.5 hours.

Essential Gear

No technical gear required but there may snow at the higher elevations in the winter.
