Approach

See the main page for directions to the starting point. From the high point along Saline Valley Road you can drive west on a poor dirt road for up to 0.8 mile if you have 4WD. Otherwise, walk the dirt road to it's end and then you'll head toward the northeast ridge of Waucoba Mountain.

Route Description

From the end of the poor dirt road, head southwest through the Pinyon pines to the base of the northeast ridge of Waucoba Mountain. This ridge is to the left of the seasonal stream (ravine) and has a bare talus slope at about 8,400 feet. Climb this ridge to the summit.

If you park along Saline Valley Road, the hike is 6.5 miles round-trip with about 4,000 feet of elevation gain.

Essential Gear

Hiking poles help on the way down because most of the gain is over about 2 miles of the hike, so it's steep. In the winter Waucoba Mountain is typically snow covered, so you might bring crampons and an ice axe.
