Approach

This hike starts at the South Fork Trailhead on Jenks Lake Road, 2.5 miles from Highway 38. The trail begins at the large paved parking lot (6,900') on Jenks Lake Road.

Route Description

When you get to the junction at South Fork Meadows (8,200') a little over 4 miles from the trailhead take the right fork (west) toward Dollar Lake (9,300'). After another 2 miles you will reach the juntion to Dollar Lake. Don't go down to Dollar Lake, but continue on another 0.7 miles to Dollar Lake Saddle. From Dollar Lake Saddle leave the trail and head southeast up the hill to the summit of Charlton Peak.

The hike is 14 to 15 miles round-trip with approximately 4,000 feet total elevation gain.

Essential Gear

Unless you are heading out in the winter, you don't need any technical gear. Make sure you have plenty of water because South Fork Meadows is the last water source.

In the winter be prepared for snow travel with all the necessary gear.
