Route Description

From highway 62 follow the sandy road four miles as it heads south first and then curves toward the southwest and curves back toward southeast. The road eventually drops into a fairly gentle sandy wash that you follow southeast for about two miles until you come to a saddle at elevation 2,820. You can continue from the saddle a little less than 1/2 mile to a wash the intersection with a wash running southwest, or you can head south over the hill from the saddle to pick up the wash that runs southwest a little higher up. Either way, once in the wash that runs southwest follow it up the canyon to near the summit of Spectre Point. Yo will pass south of Tensor (Benchmark Aqua) and continue southwest until you get to the base of Spectre Point. We found it easiest to go up to the left of the northeast ridge or you might call it the northeast face.

What information I read on the hike said it was 13 or 14 miles, but per a GPS it was more like 16 miles. The topographic map is wrong in regards to the height of Spectre Point . The map shows it as 4,200 feet, but it is over 4,400 feet. My GPS had it at 4,469 feet, but that's probably not exact. Total gain is probably between 3,000 and 3,500 feet.

This would be a lot nicer hike if you were allowed to drive down the old road for the first four miles instead of having to hike it.

Essential Gear

Good hiking shoes with some grip and lots of water.
