Love!My dad took me for my first over night hike when i was 3, and i fell in love. when i was 10 he took me to climb mt. adams, and a year later mt. shasta, but then i lost interest. so 5 years go by with no climbing...as i was driving home from work one day i saw the beautiful snow covered cascades, i fell in love again!! that day i went home and talked to my dad telling him i wanted to climb again, but now he had lost interest. so a couple more years went by...but then...i turned 18!! when i realized i could do this by myself now, i moved fast to find a friend that would climb with me. it didnt take long...one of my best friend from pre-school always wanted to climb! so we set a date 6 months in advance, July 9th and 10th!
the week we have been waiting for finally came. we were so excited! but...2 days before the big day, i messed up my back at work, but it wasn't to bad...yet...
the morning came...we got up at 2:30 am! we finished all the packing, and i ran out to the truck for a final check when i sneezed (i have bad allergies)! when that happened it felt like a knife went into my back and i fell right to the ground. i laid there for a few minutes not being able to move! not good! but i wasn't going to give up before we left the house and i couldnt let down my friend! i got up and got everything ready and we left by 3!
we took that back roads to get there and it was beautiful. we got to the ranger station right when it opened at 7 and got our permits. at this point the 5 hour drive made my back worse, it was horrible but i wasnt goin back!
we were ready, my back was in so much pain but it didnt matter!
I thought my back would get better but it really didnt, but i was still walking and we were making good time! we decided to take it slower, not just because of my back but we wanted to take it all in!
we set up our camp about 5 hours later, and took a very needed 2 hour nap!
we ate some dinner, met some new people, filled our water bottles, called our girlfriends and went to sleep...
we got up at 4, and we felt like #$%^!! but excited to get going! we started our climb at around 4:45 am!
the climbing was slow, thanks to me...but we just kept going! we made it to the false summit about 3 hours later.
at this point we were pretty tired but we were almost there...
about a hour later we made it!!
all the memories of climbing this with my dad came back and it was awesome! even though we were exhausted, we had fallin in love with the beauty and challenge of this sport. we plan on summiting many more mountains as a team. i can't wait for next year :)
