StartingOverHiked in 2009  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 22, 2009

Hiked to the summit via the upper trailhead on a cool, wet day in September, 2009. The Olympic Mountains are gorgeous and I hope to go back someday.

A very cool, steep, but short climb this is. Lots of snow from the previous storm, but a clear blue sky on this day. Once above tree line you begin getting rewarded with great views. Want to come back and climb the chute with a bit more snow. One of my favorite locals for sure.

This mountain has an excellent "effort-to-reward" ratio in terms of experience and scenery. Loved it. Watch out for all of the mountain goats!

Hadn't really planed on doing it until the next day but at the last minute headed up, started at the lower TH at 4:33 pm, reached the top in 1 1/2 hours and down in about 1 hr. Didn't see any goats.

Climbed from the lower trail head to get the added elevation gain. Summited via the summer route, although we deviated and went straight up the shoot instead of taking the switch backs. Lots of goats on top. Great trip.

We started at the Upper Trailhead. I'd say the last half of the trail to the avalance chute was mostly snow. Not too bad though. When we got to the chute, visibility was pretty bad. I was really wishing for an axe, or at least trekking poles. Might be the last time I listen to reports online of folks doing a route without... I ended up kicking steps up much of the chute for my partner and myself. At the summit, a nannie goat with two kids basically chased us off, and the visibility worsened. Glissading high up was sketchy due to not being able to see what was below. I took solace in the fact that there were many on the mountain more ill-prepared than we were lol. The glissade was a blast, really cool (but crowded!) mountain. I'm going to have to go back in good weather!

Road is still impassable about a mile below the trailhead. Headed up into some light snow, but kept going in hopes the clouds would burn off. Unfortunately, they did not but the snow was terrific for kickstepping up the Chute. Was able to enjoy some views from the top. Traversed the ridge between Ellinor and Washington but stopped when I felt it was unsafe since I was solo. Yet another great climb of Ellinor!

Ive climbed her many many times, its always fun. I use the winter route year around to avoid the crowds and make it more of a scramble. When the chutes full of snow I always bring my board, summit to bottom of chute in like 2 minutes :P Theres lots of trad climbing and class 4 scrambles available up here as well.

Guy I was with fed a goat some cheddar cheese - then wondered why it tried to take his whole lunch. Clouds rolled in. Figured it was time to leave the summit when my forehead felt like there were ants running around on it! :)

Opted for the chute route even though it was snow free. Lots of loose rock.

Deep snow. Was knee-waist deep all the way up the chute. Kicked steps the whole way. White-out conditions at the top with some breaks of sun. The snow was light and fresh but this week it will pack down and aval danger will increase. Though the narrowness of the chute and the terrain features lessen avalanche risk overall quite a bit. Road was closed about 2 miles from the lower trailhead. Took 8 hours total summit from car to car.

First mountain done since moving out west, wanted to start easy before hitting the bigger ones. A fun little hike, glissade was a blast.
