verticalNWRoute Climbed: Winter Chute  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Dec 30, 2006

More snow than the pervious years. It had been a couple of weeks since anyone had climbed up the chute. But with the clear skies and sun it made for a great winter climb.

NavySeabeeClass 2 route up main gulley  Sucess!

Enjoyed the class 2 snow climb up the main gulley between Ellinor and Washington. Unfortunately, the summit was shrouded in clouds. Endured a mini-slide down-climbing some class 3 rocks when I had to shift my feet due to some "conscientious" hiker's defecation on the next step (don't know how they managed to deposit it there). The 20 feet of sliding down the face left me a bit scarred and bloody and I was picking pebbles out of wounds for days. NICE!

Snow blocked the last mile of the road before the trail. A good spring climb on the snow. We did the standard route up the ridge, and then over to the gully.

awilsondcRoute Climbed: Upper Trailhead  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 21, 2006

First time in the Olympics, and I decided to do an overnight trip with a friend. We hiked from the upper trailhead w/ overnighter packs to the summit and got asked by EVERY group we passed "OH! Are you camping up there?!?" which became annoying, and then comical. From the summit, we made our way "across" the ridge between Ellinor and Washington which consisted of class 3 (some class 4) climbing and downclimbing mixed with couple glissades and wound up camping in a small meadow just south of Washington. I climbed Washington in the morning while my partner rested for the trip back. Followed goat trails back west and met up with the main trail back to the trailhead. This is not a good area for cross country side-hill travel with 35-40 pound packs and not an easy ridge to cross anyway. Very good area for scrambling though... great rock!

Date Climbed: Jun 23, 2006

Weather was perfect. 90 min to the summit, 45 min down. The chute still has snow, but rocks are showing in places and the glissade is no longer continual. Ripped a hole in my pants on a rock glissading down. View was great.

Completely fogged in, but a good time nonetheless. Great glissading down except for the portion immediately below the summit, which was caving in and exposing some rocks below.

Great views of the Olympics, awesome (warm, sunny) weather, and fun coming down with 3 or 4 good glissading runs (though a little fast in one area with snow too soft to maintain much control with self arrest). Check out my pictures.

Started at the lower T.H. and got into snow just above upper T.H. perfect for kicking steps and even better coming down. Great day, snow was perfect.

My first ever ascent of Mt Ellinor, started just below upper trailhead in the rain, Postholed all the way to the summit and all the way back to the timber, could not see anything past a few hundred feet, still had a great time - any time on a mountain beats sitting at home.

ellinor is a nice "climb" near my home. been up several dozen times at least. Good views in nice weather, numerous goats, good family outing, always a good workout.

I've been looking at the Olympic mountains all my life, so was super excited to actually get over to them and explore. There were plenty of people on the trail. The weather and views were phenomenal. I hiked with the best partner ever, 'Cornvallis'. We did see a couple of mountain goats.

Spectacular January day, sunny and warm. Sticky snow made travel extremely slow and difficult in the chute. We would posthole to our waists without snowshoes, but with them snow would stick to the bottom with every step and we would slide down the hill! Must have been the first party for 2004...no signs of anyone else being up there at all. Awesome glissade down!

I did this on what started as a partly cloudy day. just below the summit and after about 30 seconds of being able to see Mt Washington the clouds surrounded me and I could only see 10 yards in any direction. Then on the way down it started getting misty and then rainy. I met up with 2 of the guys on the plaque who maintain the trail on my descent, who advised me of some other area hikes. I also didn't get to see any goats. I will be back another time.

Last time I post a summit log on Ellinor--promise! (It's my favorite nearby climb--especially in winter...)

Climbed after work with Rachel Wissenschaft (actually a German name I can't quite remember). Amazing evening climb and summit just as the sun was going down. Stunning cirrus clouds and a red glow on all things. Some well-earned Moose Drool at the pub on 101 in Hoodsport.

With much pain I climbed relentlessly up Ellinor, despite my busted tail bone. My friends Jason, Karen and Melissa joined me. Unfortunately the cloud cover was pretty thick and only Mt. Washington and Lake Ellinor were visible. But the rewarding part was to see a family of Mtn. Goats and a little baby goat, which we all took pictures of. We were eventually mobbed by Chipmunks who loved the goldfishies we fed them with. It was still a great trip despite the cloudy weather!:)
