Mt. Hood above Temperature Inversion

Mt. Hood above Temperature Inversion

This amazing view of Mt. Hood was enjoyed from a logged ridge near the road leading to the Indian Springs access to the PCT, south of Wahtum Lake, Thanksgiving Day 2002.

Pic of the week

Unbelievable pic. What a great series and I could say pic of the week for two others in this set.

Re: Pic of the week

Thanks Dean! Yeah, that was an astounding sight, probably about as good as I've ever seen in the mountains. It was a magical day even though I didn't have time for the Buck Peak hike by the time I found a viable place to start. Nature made it up to me big time with that incredible show! Thanks for submitting Buck Peak!

Re: Pic of the week

Amazing and unbelieveable, Bob! What timing and talent! At first I thought it was two seperate pics. Perhaps the most unique pic of this kind I have ever seen.

Re: Pic of the week

Hey Aaron, thanks! Yeah, Paul Klenke gave me a bad time about that, in jest of course. One of the more interesting phenomena I've ever witnessed. I've got more photos from that day here if you're interested. Look in the thumbnails for Multnomah County - the counties are alphabetical. -Bob

Re: Gorgeous Mt Hood shot!

Thanks again Byron! I've climbed Hood at least eight times, but the last time was in '92, and that will be my final climb. Life is too short for repeats! As I always say - So Many Mountains, So Little Time!

Re: Nice!

Thanks - beautiful day indeed! Hey, we missed you at the last get-together in November, and when Peak Freak was here in December I think it was. Interested in attempting Schreiner Peak this weekend? It's south of Estacada, the highest peak in the Bull of the Woods area. I'm tied up on Saturday, but Sunday's open. Conditions might be perfect if it's not raining since, it might be a pretty lousy bushwhack in the summer. -Bob

Re: Nice!

Yeah, I'm sorry I missed everyone. I was out of town when the PDX get-together happened and saw your get together post with Peak Freak a day late. As far as this weekend goes, I'm heading up to Devil's Peak on Sat. and Sun. is out for me, for I have some in town obligations with Debbie that I'd better not break...as I tend to be in the "dog house" enough as it is already.(ha ha) Have a great trek up Schreiners and I appreciate the invite!

More like photoS of the week

Here we go again, Bob, that spliced Hood shot. Two shots combined into one. You're still not fooling me.

Congrats. This must be Photo of the Week #12 for you.

Re: More like photoS of the week

You guys did your homework! But I counted 9 for Mt. Hood. Didn't double check. Actually, my other POTW of Hood was taken by my friend Dennis Stilwell, so only 11 were my pix. But bear in mind, most of mine where when there was a whole lot less competition on this site!

Unreal!

Looks like a flood had engulfed the mountain to about ~8000 foot level!!

Incredible photo Bob and congrats. on the photo of the week (great choice)!!

Re: Unreal!

Thanks Radek! I think that phenomenon must have occurred because I was at the exact elevation of the temperature inversion. Any lower or any higher wouldn't have made that perfectly straight line. That morning there had been a cloud cover with the tops at about the same elevation. The clouds had burned off by the time of this photo, but they left a thick coating of frost on everything. It was gorgeous, and I suppose I should post some of those pix as well. Anyway, I was at about 4100 feet, so I'm thinking the "flood" was at that same elevation. Anyone else know anything about this? -Bob

Re: Congrats, Bob!

Thanks Don! Hey, will you be around on Super Bowl weekend? If you have no plans for Saturday evening, you're definitely invited to our annual slide party. I think I mentioned it to you earlier but didn't know when it would be. Would love to have you. One of my friends climbed Cho Oyu and will have slides. Another (Duane) climbed Denali. It'll be a fun night! Let me know in an e-mail message. -Bob

It's a wonderful shot of a wonderful mountain! Congratulations to the photo of the week. I took a short look on your pages and pictures and I'm thrilled. It's a masterwork. I must return soon with a little bit more time (you know: So many mountains, so little time!: it's my experience too;-)

Thanks for sharing those gemstones.

Best regards Michael
