Mt. Hood inverted shadow

Mt. Hood casts an inverted sunset shadow into the clouds. Photo taken from I-84 east of the mountain above the Columbia River.

inverted shadow?

What is the physics behind an inverted shadow? I haven't heard of this term before. Was the sun below the mountain and cast a shadow on the (higher) clouds?

Re: inverted shadow?

The sun has gone over the horizon, so in a sense it is below the mountain. It probably wouldn't work if there were mountains to the west of the mountain, but there aren't in this case. Nothing but lowlands and the ocean. :-)

Re: inverted shadow?

Thanks. That's a cool phenomenon. I don't remember ever seeing it, but maybe here in California the requisite conditions are harder to come by.

Re: inverted shadow?

We actually see this phenomenon somewhat frequently in the Portland area, but during sunrise instead of sunset of course. If the clouds are in just the right range of altitude and the eastern horizon (from the perspective of Mt. Hood) is clear (very frequent with the Cascade rain shadow drying the air to the east), we can see a long inverted shadow on the bottom of the clouds, sometimes from east to west! It's much more dramatic than the one in this photo, but I've never had an opportunity to capture it on film. :-( I should point out that I coined the term "inverted shadow". I don't know if there is a scientific name for the phenomenon. :-)
