After losing the trail in the woods I followed ski tracks and emerged just below this intersection.

The hiking trail, after veering southward at around 2800', turns due west a little below 3000' feet, gradually cozying up to Chin Clip, then just below the intersection in your photo it veers right (north and even a little east of north) before heading northwesterly to the Taft Lodge.
