4/5/08: Went (mostly) up Timp, left from Dry Canyon TR at 330 am and met a bunch of people from the Serac club right after they turned around at the upper traverse just below the summit. The weather was actually pretty nice until a nasty system blew in barraging us with a fierce wind and horizontal snow pellets. I turned around at about 11300 ft in the middle of the 'step' due to deteriorating conditions and not wanting to solo low 5th class mixed terrain...the downclimb sucked and rock was atrocious.
Beautiful route though, very direct and aesthetic.
4/12/08: Success! Quite a bit of snow fell during the week which made for a bit more postholing. Climbed both steps solo, both were snow-covered. Fun scrambling! Gained the summit ridge about an hour past dawn and traversed over to the summit for a glorious view. What an awesome mountain. Left the Dry Canyon TR at 2:45a and summited around 8.

The perfect mountain
10/10 Update. My wife finally went on a hike with me. She and I summited to the usual crowd the first Saturday in October. I resisted the urge to get in a fistfight with those on top.
I love Timp. My goal is a winter ascent, but until then you can find me going up and down the regular trails and even blazing a few of my own. I'll never forget the time I descended down the west face after summiting with some friends - at 16 it lit a fire in me for this mountain.
ha ha ideas like that are always hilarious in retrospect. Nice.

Timpooneke at Night
We were originally planning on getting there for sunrise, but we left Provo a bit later than we had planned. Getting on the trail at 3:45 in the morning, we summited about 3.5 hours later. The trail is quite scenic, though we didn't get to see much of it while it was still dark. It's nice to see wildflowers once in a while.
I wish I would have known more about the geography of the area when I did this hike. It would have been nice to know what I was looking at. Oh well, maybe I'll have to use that as an excuse to do it again!

Aspen Grove trail
A friend said he was going to sun-rise hike Timp. with a group and invited me to join them. I arrived at the parking lot a little late. So just hiked a little faster then normal to catch them. After passing hundreds of hikers and about 3 hours later I was on the summit. I found out later that not one person in that group even drove to Timp. parking.
This mountain is truly beautiful. Visited the crash site on the way to the summit via the Timpanookee Trail. The upper meadows are amazing when the wildflowers are in bloom.

Timpooneke Trail
Did Timp about 32 years ago. Out of all the people I
counted on the summit, just one person had a large object
that he called a wireless phone. It took him several "trys"
to contact somebody, while he was eating lunch. I also
remember a large group of people flocking to a small glacier
or snowfield, just so they could glissade down it. I had
to laugh, because it didn't look like it was any faster than
going down on the trail. Oh well, whatever turns them on!!!
Nice views can be found on any day from the summit.

First Timer
A couple friends asked if I wanted to hike this mountain called Timp with them one Saturday. I said YES and have hiked six more peaks in UT & NV since then. Caught the bug I guess! We climbed via the Timpooneke trail with a descent on the glacier from the peak. This was an awesome hike - the view when reaching the bowl at 10,000' was superb.
We did have a scary moment on the glacier though - a teenager lost his footing and tumbled down the rocky surface a couple hundred feet. He was cut and bruised pretty good, but one of the guys in our group had a first aid kit and took care of the boy. We all helped get him down to the cabin by the lake for medical attention. I'm glad it all turned out alright!

Aspen Grove Trail - night hike under full moon
(1) September 21, 2002: My college roommate and I decided to climb Timp at night under a full moon. We hit the trail about midnight under clear, bright night skies. At Emerald Lake we decided to nap for a couple of hours so that we could time our ascent to the top to coincide with the sunrise. Sure enough, we arrived just before 7:00 am in time to see the sun rise. If you have the stamina, I would highly recommend doing a night climb under a bright moon. There's nothing like it!

Labor Day Hike
Went by myself. Got a late start (on the trail by 11:30) Took the Aspen Grove route. There were quite a few people on the trail, but I was surprised there weren't more considering Timp's popularity and the day I chose to go.
The hike was fairly uneventful. One interesting point was when I decided to hike up the glacier from the lake instead of just taking the trail. I do not recommend this. It is doable, but very difficult. Towards the top of the glacier it gets very steep and all you have to walk on is loose rock. When I finally got up the glacier and met some people I was asked "Were you the guy who climbed up the glacier?" They thought I was crazy. In retrospect, I was crazy.
View from the top was nice - not hazy. On the way down, the large goat herd that lives on Timp was milling around the trail. I got some great pictures that I still need to post here on summitpost. Much farther down the trail, perhaps 30 minutes from the trailhead, I ran into three large moose! They were right off the trail. It was too dark to get any good pictures without my tripod. When I got my tripod out and set up and finally set the timer on my camera, the moose walked away. I was irritated.
You were lucky the moose walked away. Moose are more deadly than bears. For "reals". :)

we set up camp at hidden lake and climbed the peak the next day, incredible views of the wasatch. this had to be my favorite 1st class scramble of all time. if i where to do this one again I would do it in a day rather then lug 30#s of gear up 3000ft vertical gain.

Tough hike for occasional hikers
Went hiking up Timpanogos on a family Memorial Day weekend hike. But, not everyone was up to a full trip to the summit, so we turned back after hiking for several hours. Despite turning back, we all enjoyed the great views along the way.
I hiked the Aspen Grove route with a couple of friends. Since afternoon thunderstorms were rolling in, we decided to turn back at the saddle.
On the way up we found a man and his son stuck up on a dry waterfall. They lost the trail on the way down and ended up descending a steep water-carved channel. We helped them downclimb back to the main trail. Although they were visibly nervous, they both did great for their first bouldering experience. Hopefully their next one won't be so exciting. :)

First Time
First time up via Timpooneke trail. Made it to the top in about 2.5 hours. Great views of a storm coming in.

Good Pioneer Day HikeHiked up the Aspen Grove trail today. I was on the trail by about 8:30 AM. I took my sweet time and reached the top around noon.
The mountain is very beautiful this time of year - still very green.
There is still some snow in the rock field, but not enough to cause trouble to fools like myself who hike in Vans tennis shoes and shorts.
The mountain goats were out in full force.
