Needle Rock

Needle Rock

Probably the crown jewel of the pillars in this area is Needle Rock (as seen from Elephant Rock here), located on the flank of Dome Rock. There are bolts on the south side of this up a flat face. The smaller spire to its right also has bolts. I investigated this years ago and there was webbing on this one but I still can't find info on this one. We traversed it earlier the morning we climbed Elephant but it looked out of my league. I would appreciate it if everyone forgot about this picture and did not go here until I can figure out the route up, do it and post it. Thanks for your support.

n rock

from Portland Rock Climbs by Tim Olsen - "... the classic 150ft spire Needle Rock. This spire has seem just a mere handful of ascents since Jim Nieland's second ascent in 1968. Commence by scrambleing up the initial section to a single fir tree belay. The route is generaly nailed (A1) on the first pitch (but could be free climbed at appoximatly 5.9) while the second pitch is free climbed at about 5.8. Two rope rappel. Expect wide crack climbing gear and some loose rock."

n rock

from A Climbing Guide to Oregon by Nick Dodge 1971 - "This 150-foot spire is loaced a short distance east of dome rock and is about 200 ft below the ridge on the south slope. First ascent by Eugene Dod and Jim Nieland. Grade I-6-A1" There is a picture showing the route going on the uphill side. It also mentions the spire below as Little Needle Rock.

Re: n rock

Sorry I didn't see your post a year and a half ago! Thanks for the response. I could see some webbing on the uphill side when I first visited this in about 2002. Looked like a traverse around the west side to start and then we couldn't see where it may have gone after that. Still wondering about this one. I don't have the Dodge book but several of my friends have copies. Will have to check it out again.
