Just big enough to stick a hand in, which I didn't do.

No idea on what made it, but your guess seems to make sense considering what looks almost like a little barricade in front. I was figuring a bird, maybe an owl, but I doubt a bird would make that little pile. (Of course, I have no idea what I'm talking about.)
