North Palisade and the U-Notch

North Palisade and the U-Notch

The north face of the North Palisade from the summit of Mount Gayley, showing the U-Notch. Be sure to thoroughly scout snow conditions on the way up. Avoid the ice, or that huge bergschrund at the bottom will make for a really bad day. (Sierra Nevada, California, USA.)

I read Norman Clyde's

account of a bad day on the U when he lost it and plummeted down the notch barely leaping the schrund and spending the rest of the season recovering from a broken ankle at Glacier Lodge.

Nice Shot!

First of all, this is an awesome shot! I love the Palisades! Second, this summer, my friend and I climbed to the bergschrund and it was just a small level area with about a 10-15 ft. cliff... I've heard that it can turn into a crevass, but from what I saw, it was just a ledge with a cliff rising above it... does it depend on the time of year you go?

Re: Nice Shot!

Yes, conditions change dramatically. Once I climbed the U-Notch in the middle of winter and we didn't even see a crevasse or burgschrund at all.

Avoid the Ice/bergschrund?

Don't you realize that some of us go to these places specifically for the ice? The Bergschrund can be the most fun and only really challenging part of the couloir.
