Making things tough  Sucess!

September 19, 2021: Summitted Taft and South Schell Peaks which don't have their own page. Sustained winds of 40+ MPH, was not a fun time walking the ridge from one to the other

Nov 1, 2020: I could have driven up to the trailhead but I thought it would make for a better hike by parking at the 7500 foot contour. Made my way to Middle Schell then dropped into the basin on a horrendous scree field. Also it is November but on the summit I was too warm for a single long sleeve layer. Had to put on my short sleeve shirt

Didn't quite make it

Got a late start at around 11:00 am. Hiked briefly and then started skinning up the road past the campground and into the basin. After a fall and winter-long peakbagging hiatus I was not in as good of shape as in summer and I was also sinking into the isothermal snow even with my skis on. Ended up turning back at around 10200.

Tour de Schell  Sucess!

The trailhead had a trail going off of it, but it goes South towards South Schell. So I hit that first by direct climbing the slope, then walked the ridge to North Schell. I was a bit surprised to see no trail at all from North Schell so I descended a scree fest to the valley below, which took a lot of the fun out of the day. Glad I did it, but not worth a repeat to me.

Quick, cold trip  Sucess!

A quick AM jaunt on a brief weather window. It's a decent camping spot, and something to do while crossing Nevada. Trip report.

via Timber Creek  Sucess!

Did North Schell plus Point 3,571 (a little bit by accident) via Timber Creek. Saw 2 Elk but no people. Nobody had signed the summit log since 2 weeks. Great fall colors. Absolutely beautiful hike, great scenery.

North Schell Peak  Sucess!

I left SL around noon and was at the TH area in Timber Creek campground by 4 pm. My initial plan was to drive down, camp, and climb North Schell the next day, but still having 5 hours of daylight I decided to climb it that day. Not knowing how long it would take I headed out at a pretty quick pace and reached the summit in 1 hour 20 minutes. After spending 15 min on top I headed down at a more leisurely pace knowing I had plenty of daylight and was still back to my truck less than an hour later. Total RT time was about 2.5 hours. Great hike and very beautiful area. Everything was very green as the last of the snow was melting and stream was flowing pretty good. I camped at Timber Creek and the next day did Mount Moriah.

Before the storms  Sucess!

Got up early to beat the storms that were blowing up each day starting around 10am. This is an easy hike, and that's why we chose it for a labor day weekend getaway. Met JdMorehouse the night before we climbed, he happened to be out for a walk after his climb and we talked for a bit. Lots of sheep along the route, had to chase off a particularly nasty sheep dog that came barking and growling up at us.

Thunderstorms  Sucess!

This was to be the first of all the peaks found on the Schell Range between North and South Schell, but only Peak 3595 was attained after North Schell because of a building thunderstorm that decided to drop bolts of lightning right over our heads. The descent down the steep, extremely loose slope in the rain south of Peak 3595 (just a little north of Taft) was an adventure I'd just as soon not repeat any time soon.

Since there isn't any page for South Schell, I'll add the trip report here. We topped out on South Schell after leaving the road about two miles from the stream crossing in fine weather. I opted to continue south on the ridge to Peak 3460, a fine peak that's also on the Nevada 11,000'+ list, while the others descended back down to the road. I went down into the next drainage over good footing and found my way back to the forest road we came in on. Rain came in while I was coming down, and later in the day turned into a deluge.

West Slope Snow Approach  Sucess!

I made this climb in early May while there was still significant late season hard packed snow on the western slopes above the creek. Under these conditions, kick stepping straight up the snow field was physically intense but made for a fast, clean ascent that cut the total hiking distance in half. However, I imagine this route would be inadvisable after snow melt, with all the steep talus and loose rocky soil in the aspens.

North Schell  Sucess!

Really beautiful early fall day in a beautiful range! Strolled over to the peak just south of it too which seems to get a lot less visitors, at least based on the register. Saw a few eagles too.

From Timber Creek  Sucess!

Was lucky enough to do North Schell two years ago today. I echo Ammon Hatch regarding curbing impulses; I left the faded use trail and took a more direct route up. Coming down the ridge way was much better and would have been more enjoyable going up (the west face has much worse scree/talus and rock hopping). It was a joy to make it to the top. Saw several elk on the slopes. And Timber Creek along the trail is one of the most beautiful strolls in Nevada...lots of flowers and butterflies.

Eclipse  Sucess!

At some point early in the hike you might have a voice inside your head say "Why bother going all the way around that ridge? Going up those west slopes doesn't seem too bad". You need to stem that notion before it becomes your actual plan of action and you do something stupid.

As you might have guessed I did a miserable slog up the west face. About the time I reached the summit an annular solar eclipse began. It was a bit cloudy, but there were enough breaks that we could take a peak up at the sun on occasion (with proper protection). We descended the normal route until it was about time for the eclipse to reach it's maximum. We sat and watched. What an awesome show.

Got back to the car and drove back to Salt Lake while listening to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

Great hike  Sucess!

Got chased off the night before by a massive storm, climbed in the morning. Amazing wildflowers, particularly lower down, and the aspen krummholz at treeline was unique and cool. Definitely want to see more of the Schells!
