north slopes of Allen Mountain

The high point in this photo is the northern summit of Allen Mountain, which obstructs a large portion of the mountain from view when viewed from Many Glacier Hotel. A very large scree field, partially split in two by a patch of trees, sits at the bottom of the frame. In order to gain the High Traverse route to Snow Moon Basin, one must ascend directly up the left side of the scree field to the base of the towering cliffs. Just to the left of the large shadow that covers the upper reaches of the scree field, a broad, right-to-left ascending cliff band is visible; just above this cliff is the marvelous game trail that will provide relatively straightforward access to Snow Moon Basin. Photo taken from the lower employee dorms near Many Glacier Hotel. Click here for diagram that will hopefully aid route finding. September 14, 2008
