| my girlfriend and I made the winter break trip out from Oregon to visit GBNP. We hiked into Wheeler Pk campground from Lehman Creek and chose the best of the campsites available (the whole place was empty). The weather was a bit chilly the next morning, around 0degF, but the skies were clear. I found some brutal, dry, great basin powder gaining the north ridge. Once on the ridge, it was quick moving. By the time I made the summit, I was down to a single thermal longsleeve tee. Spectacular time to be at the park. My girlfriend could watch me most of the time I was on the ridge. We enjoyed another night at the vacant campground, then hiked out and had a fun time in Ely. | ||

| Started early @ 7:00, back down @ 11:30. Nice day hike, quite steep at the end, but well worth it. Great views, and my friend and I were the only people on top. | ||

| WyoNative | Remote National Park ![]() Date Climbed: Jul 19, 2008 | |
| I found this peak to be a nice hike except for the uphill on the scree over the last mile or so.........Great Basin National Park is very remote. I had perfect weather and shared the summit with 4 other groups. | ||

| I had an amazing time at GBNP. Wheeler peak offers great views at the top. It was overcast the whole time. The trail is great, fairly easy climb. The last thousand feet is steep. I loved the alpine flowers that lined the trail along the way. | ||

| ScottyS | Night Hike ![]() Date Climbed: Jul 9, 2008 | |
| Did a night hike while on a fieldwork mission, I think 1:45 from trailhead to summit. Smoke obscured the moonlit view, guess I'll have to go back. | ||

| A likable peak and an easy route, if you leave out the long drive from Vegas. | ||

| Easy hike to summit from campground at base. Summit views rival Telescope Peak and Sierra Blanca (NM). Continued on to Jeff Davis and a not-so-fun descent down the North Ridge in a storm that seemed to have developed out of nowhere. I've climbed 35+ years and never saw a storm come up so quick. | ||

| Went with my family as a teenager. Started out just looking at the ancient trees and ended up convincing mom and dad to let me break away and keep going. | ||

| It was 17 years ago since I visited that place. I remember seeing tons of deer beneath the peak. There was a "rock shelter" and a Heliograph Station on the summit. I don't know if its still there. The Bristlecone pines, just a short distance below the summit, are incredible! These mountains get plenty of lightning strikes during the summer, and lots of snow in the winter. | ||

| My buddy and I decided to get out of Las Vegas for a weekend and decided to climb Nevada's second highest. We ended up hiking up a rock slide gulley then hitting the ridge and following the trail to the summit. Pretty nice views, and it was the highest I have ever hiked to before. | ||

| Thought the worst of my cold had passed, but Mr. Wheeler made it known that I was mistaken. Got passed by several folks on the way up, but finally made it. Great views. Shared a bit of summit time with the Head Ranger at GBNP - nice guy. | ||

| lasvegaswraith | Love it ![]() Date Climbed: May 4, 2007 | |
| Fourth time up in 4 years, and I love every time up. GBNP is fantastic scenery and largely undiscovered by the masses. This is a fantastic climb in any season (winter is a little sketchy admittedly), and man that glissade back down to Stella lake is a blast. | ||

| Frankly45 | Wheeler in August 2007 Date Climbed: Aug 11, 2007 | |
| Tyler Thigpen, (Birmingham, Alabama) and RJ DePond (Cambria California) were the earliest to the summit this day. It was very windy but magically beautiful. The round trip took 4 hours and 45 minutes. | ||
