I hiked up the Barr Trail in a long day in 1998. There was a race that day, which was a surprise when I was the first to the top (we started earlier than everybody else).
Almost made a one day winter climb, but it got so windy, a thousand feet below the summit, we turned around. Did the 2007 pikes peak ascent, what a run!
NW Slopes from Glen Cove Date Climbed: Aug 1, 2009
Celebrated my dad's 60th birthday by camping at Glen Cove, then ascending the bowl to join the NW Slopes route en route to the summit. He did great despite a few inches of fresh August snow above 13k'
I live in the plains and my knees are a curse so I hike quite a bit slower than most at high altitude. Started at the Barr trailhead with my brother and sister at Midnight. Reached the summit at 11:30. Headed back down at 12:15 only to dodge a thunderstorm and duck into the A-Frame at treeline for about an hour. Continued down the Barr trail back to the trailhead by 7pm for a total hike time of roughly 19 hours. The most brutal yet memorable hike of my life!
First attempt at drive up was unsuccessful when kid drove off the top trying to kill himself. Road was closed right in front of me! Had to come back the following day to summit. Pics at http://www.willhiteweb.com/index_198.htm
