Nice trail, moderate hike. Hiked up and ran most of it down.

I though I did Elden too much until I met a guy who told me he thinks he has done it over 300 times. Me, I've only done it just over 100 times.

edevartGreat Views  Sucess!

Not exactly a wilderness summit, but nice views nonetheless. Awesome watching hang gliders launch from the take off near the summit.

Date Climbed: Jun 25, 2007

We hike the Elden lookout route i was a little disappointed to find that there was a road that goes up to the top as well but it was still a great time with great views of the city of flagstaff.

surgentNice hike from the east  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 23, 2006

The east-side trail is a great workout and very much worth the effort. The fall colors were starting to turn. This was far more evident on the trees looking west and north in the little bowl on the summit ridge. The rounmd-trip hike took me about 3 hours. The following day we drove up the back side road and explored the upper meadows and forests, spending a few hours just relaxing in our camp chairs, periodically driving to somewhere different for some different views. Great hike and very convenient to Flagstaff.

2skinnersDisappointed!!  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 1, 2007

Climbed to the summit via the lookout trail. A good workout, but the views were not all that great from what I am used to seeing. I do however think this would be a beautiful hike during autumn. That being said, I will probably not do this one again.

For me it is the ugliest way to hike this. Sandy Seep to Hearts Trail to the top of Elden is the best route in my opinion.

A friend suggested I go up Elden while visiting Flagstaff and dropped me off to hike the mountain. He hadn't hiked it, but a friend had. I made it up with a bit of heavy breathing. The view and Autumn color were worth the work. On the summit, I had to hurry as the sun was setting. The sun hitting the other side of the mountain was gorgeous. The scramble down was an experience. I'll definitely need the info on terrain next time I go for a new trail later in the day.

Nice view of Flagstaff. A bit of an eyesore with all the antennas on top.

Wow! This trail is really steep! Oh, to be a worker on that trail maintenance crew...

Overall, I'd say that for such a relatively small mountain, this climb/hike is a killer. I have read that lots of folks use this route as a trainer... Now I see why. But all strenuousness aside I enjoyed the trip up. Good views, not too hot (for August), a great talk with the dude in the tower, and of course being able to spot Granite Mt. in Prescott from up there. Nice population of falcons up there too.

Vaughn, Dy, Ryan, Kim and Keith knocked it out in the snow. A nip of liquid warmth on top and it was back down out of the wind.

callthedoctorRoute Climbed: Little Bear Date Climbed: 8/13/02

Didn't summit to Elden (been there, done that)...but wanted to try the Little Bear/Heart Loop...

About 11+miles of hiking....Little Bear is a wonderful ascent, Heart Trail descent is rocky and an ankle buster....

Overall a great day...horsefiles ate me alive....saw tons of hornytoads....

SE Face - nice 3rd and 4th class scrambling up the rock face you can see clearly from the Flagstaff Mall.

callthedoctorRoute Climbed: Up Heart Trail, down Lookout... Date Climbed: 4/19/02  Sucess!

My fourth time up Eldon and this was by far, the best of my hikes...the "Heart Trail" is seldom used and I didn't see a soul until I reached "Sunset Trail". I traversed across the catwalk with great southerly views...

It was exceptionally windy and I had to lean into it for about 100 yards at one of the clearings. I reached the junction of the Lookout Trail and went up to the tower where the ranger and I were experiencing 75 mph winds in the 3-4 story Lookout tower!! WOW.

Anyway, completed the loop by going down Lookout, across Christmas Tree to Sandy Seep and back to the car...

Excellent day, despite the wind....I highly recommend this hike next time you do Eldon...plan on at least 6 hours.

what a piece of crap! I hate this trail it sucks so bad! by the time you get to the top your ready to take a nap. My brother steven cross and I hike it for training, full backpacks and all, so yes I hate this mountain, a lot of stairstepping and steep grades. The trail itself is really easy to follow but you go up so fast that it tires you out fast. have fun because I don't!

Steven CrossRoute Climbed: Mt. Elden Trail Date Climbed: hike it about 20 times a year  Sucess!

I use Mt. Elden to get into shape. The first time i hiked it was when i was about 9. This year I hiked it on 3/21. The snow got to deep near the top to get to the tower. This is my first hike this year and my legs are sore!
