| The IMSS resort is one of the cleanest, most peaceful places in Mexico (except on the weekends!!!) This mountain is definitely under-estimated - it gets a little steep and very loose volcanic rock to get to the ridge after tree line. Emily and I drove from sea-level both times and struggled with the altitude, but fought through it. The views are always amazing and the people always friendly. A great way to acclimatize, but a better place to visit and relax! The hike usually takes us 6 hours up and 3 back, at a relatively average pace. Feel free to email me if you want any info. | ||

| After attempting Izta with bad weather a day before, we climbed La Malinche in beautiful weather as part of our acclimatization for Pico de Orizaba. I greatly underestimated this mountain: at the end I realized that it is not as easy as I first thought. We had great views of Orizaba from the summit. For more details, check my Orizaba trip report. | ||

| This was my ninth time up Malinche and my twentieth time over 14,000 feet. It was a fun slow climb with a bunch of friends. 18 out of the 21 of us who started out in the morning summitted. For many, it was their first time above tree line and at considerable altitude. It was a pretty clear day, and we could see the surrounding mountains well. Popocatepetl looked very quiet despite an early morning eruption that rattled doors and windows and woke up me and many others. Just when we had descended below tree line (where you can no longer see Popo), we heard another explosion and soon the ash cloud came right over us. It was too bad that we didn't see that eruption when we were on the summit. I took some nice photos, and if they develop well i'll post them. =-) | ||

| Climbed with ScottyS, left just before dark and ascended via headlamp, made the 4500' and the 12 or so mile roundtrip in about 4.5 hours. Being new years eve, we enjoyed viewing the fireworks below. There were a couple of tourists setting up camp just below the summit | ||

| This was my 8'th time up Malinche, and i think it was my 18'th time above 14,000 feet. Great hike, a lot of fun and a great way to get energy out. Met some very nice people from Canada on the summit. Climbing is a great way to meet nice people. The weather was perfect (as most consider perfect; i always prefer climbing in snow, but today was the next best thing). Malinche is a fun day-hike all around. =-) | ||

| Started out from our IMSS cabin at 4:07am. Got off route while in the forest and ended up climbing the left north chute of the thumb rock that you see from Puebla. This was where the 3 dogs that followed me stopped. After the thumb rock I had to downclimb towards the saddle on the north ridge. Picked up the correct trail and got to the summit at 8:33am. Clear day, but windy. Left the summit at 9:07am and was back at our IMSS cabin at 10:50am. | ||

| Escorted by a dog from IMSS Resort to the summit . Wonderful sunset on POPO . Slept under a cave at about 4100 m, then climbed back in the following morning ( all the time with the dog ) . The sun rose just beside the Orizaba, and POPO smoke towards IZTA : magic ! | ||

| I enjoyed this climb immensely, it was a cloudy day with intervals of hiking in dense clouds followed by periods of clear blue sky. The hike lasted about 4 hours and was the first serious summit scramble for my girlfriend. I have to say that I was disgusted with the graffiti adorning the summit, but overall for both an enjoyable day hike and as a tune up for Izta it is well worth the trip as climbing 4000 vertical feet in such a short time up to almost 15000 is a challenging task to say the least! | ||

| We climbed the standard route with about a thousand locals that day. The presence of snow had brought out the crowds to enjoy a nice day in the snow. Definitely an experience. We saw everything from elderly ladies with dresses and low sided shoes to groups roped together with electrical cord. (All of which were moving faster than we were.) We summited with a local dog that had decided to attach itself to us. See my trip report. | ||

| Beautiful weather, great views, no special equipment or anything required. We didn't do Malinche as an acclimatization to Iztaccihuatl but as a "chillout" after it :-) The only thing i hated was the camp, being "trapped" in a cage-style resort with tons of people. Next time i will take my tent up to where the forest ends and enjoy the silence. | ||

| Reached the summit in about 5 hours from the IMSS resort. The hike up through the forest was quite nice and there was much more snow on the mountain than I expected. Since we were there on a weekend, the resort and the mountain were flooded with people and I posed for lots of pictures with Mexican climbers on the way down. The mountain is perfect for acclimatization and is a good climb in its own right as well. For more details of my climb on La Malinche, check out my Trip Report. | ||

| Started from the government camp, (IMSS) with girlfriend, made up in 2:30 hrs. The trail is easy to find. This is a good acclimation hike for Izta and Orizaba. | ||
