| gconyers | Getting to Lloa ![]() Date Climbed: Oct 17, 2009 | |
| Public transport to Lloa options (we got to Lloa for $0.75 each, began at 1:30 PM in old town, arrived at 3 PM Lloa). We took the Trole to its southern end, and then caught a bus to Mena 2, a neighborhood on the west side of southern Quito (we asked an attendant which bus to take, then asked again when to get off). The bus dropped us off Calle Antonio Jose de Sucre and the Camino a Lloa (there´s a sign pointing to the right, up the hill). There are pickups there waiting to take you ($5 to Lloa, $70 to the refuge). BUT we took the bus, which picks people up on a side street (25c). If you walk from AJdeS toward Lloa on the Lloa road, take the first right over a curb (car´s can´t pass but you can) onto a side street. Here ask about the bus, there is a blue waiting room on the left side of the street with plastic chairs and bathroom in the back. I do not know how often service is, but we only waited about 10 min. For the road to the refuge, get off the bus at the last place it stops and follow the main road down a big hill, and follow as it curves right up a big hill. 4 or 5 hours walking to the refuge, or take a pickup halfway (we paid $17) for 2h walking or farther, for more money. | ||

| HIGH EXPEDITIONS | Route Climbed: Guagua Pichincha ![]() Date Climbed: Sep 10, 2009 | |
| Climbed with Andreea (ROM), Ben, Daniel, Steve and Duncan (ENG). Our hike started at (3,350 m / 10,988 ft). Got to the summit (4,781 m / 15,682 ft) after 5 and a half hours. Great views of the Cordillera Oriental. The crater was completely covered by clouds but we still could smell the sulfur. The roads from the town of Lloa to the refuge are in good conditions.. good news! | ||

| Three hours to the top. Weather was good but foggy. Climbed with mi novio Boriss. Stayed 5 seconds at the top and we boggied on down due to thunder threatening. Nice views of Quito from the Teleferiqo area. A great acclimatization climb and training for the next climbs to be done in Ecuador. | ||

| YemeniIllini05 | Both Rucu and Guagua ![]() | |
| Summited Rucu Pichincha on 27 June. Took the Teleferiqo to 3,900 meters, and hiked the remainder on foot. Altitude sickness at about 4,600 meters, but managed to scramble up the class 3 summit block to the summit. Total time from Teleferiqo to summit: 3 hours. Summited Guagua the following day. Began at a parking area at around 4,050 meters -- stopped at the refugio at 4,550 meters for a breather before summiting. Very cold and windy above 4,600 meters. Little visibility along the summit ridge, but an easy class 2/3 scramble at the summit block made it worthwhile. Time from parking area to summit: 3 hours. Need a 4WD vehicle to reach the parking area from the village of Lloa, however. | ||

| pattycoloma | Ruco Pichincha Via Teleferico, the first mountain I've been at! ![]() Date Climbed: Jun 29, 2008 | |
| It was the first mountain I've been at! We started the hike about 11:00 am with the people I was from the teleferico (4100 m). After 3 hours I got the summit (4698 m) and I was the last one, but I was very proud of what I've accomplished. It was pretty cloudy so I couldn't see anything. I expect come back in the future! | ||

| Left Quito at 10:30 am. and took the teleferico cable cars up to 4,100 m from where we started hiking up towards Rucu Pichincha's base. Perfect weather conditions. Anu (USA), Tiffany (USA) and I got to the top (4,698 m/15,413 ft) after 2 hours and a half hours of hiking and scrambling. It hailed a bit on our way back to the teleferico. Tiffany and I went to a Chinese restaurant soon after we got to Quito, she tought me how to use chopsticks. I really enjoyed it! | ||

| Desert Solitaire | Rucu and Padre Encantado in a storm ![]() Date Climbed: Aug 19, 2008 | |
| Started from the TeleferiQo much later than expected (be warned, sometimes they don´t open up until 11am!). Cloudy and misty the whole way up. Followed the ridge 100% all the way to the top for some fun scrambling (one small 5.4 move, the rest 3rd and 4th class). Freshly falling snow made things spicy and wet my tennis shoes. 2 hrs to the summit. Traversed to Padre Encantado, still bad conditions. Then decided to bail off and retraced my way back the ridge to the summit of Rucu and back down to the Paramo. Carried overnight gear the whole way, so decided to sleep high up on the Paramo at 4300 meters. Great night with a storm outside, but peaceful and warm inside the tent. Good acclimitization climb. | ||

| After a failed attempt in going up to Pasochoa Trailhead (our truck got stucked in the mud), I decided to take Romy (Austria) and my French Canadian friends Alan, Marie Michéle and Marie Héléne to Rucu Pichincha. We took the express teleférico up to 4,100 m. from where we started hiking up. Weather conditions were just perfect, nice views of surroundings and of the capital city. Got to the top (4,698 m/15,413 ft) after 2 hours and 45 minutes of hiking and scrambling. Took a few pictures at the top, met with Jacobo (ecuadorian mountain guide) and his german client and got back to Quito by late afternoon. Nice weekend trip! | ||

| simonzster | Turned Back Date Climbed: Apr 14, 2008 | |
| Three other students and I tried Rucu, but we were turned back by snow and bad weather. We only had 2 pairs of gloves between the four of us, and our hands and feet were freezing. We made it to about 4650 meters on the top of the sandy (more like icey) slope of the easy route. | ||
