phillinleyRoute Climbed: North Elbert Trail Date Climbed: May 22, 2002  Sucess!

Extremely cold day for May that started out with an hour or so of snow showers in the wee hours of the morning. Heavy winds kept the afternoon stormsto the north. Still plenty enough snow for a nice snow slide back down on my cafeteria tray. If I had a chance to do it again, I'd take the Halfmoon trail since it is shorter and just as easy of a route.

2nd summit of Nolan's 14. Steve Simmons was about an hour behind and most other runners were ahead. We climbed the NW ridge, 3000 ft. in 1 mile, descended over Bull Hill to Echo Canyon. On to La Plata.

Tried to solo Mt. Elbert, but there were way too many interesting people on the trail. Only Grays, Longs, and Whitney have been as crowded in my experience. So I gave up and enjoyed the social mtn. hike. Pretty big old pile of stones Elbert is.

tjburrRoute Climbed: Echo Canyon Date Climbed: 07/10/1988  Sucess!

Climbed with Sean McHugh (now deceased). Most memorable moments included hiking through the largest patch of Columbine I've ever seen; passing by some old mine structures; and climbing in weather that included rain, sleet, snow and hail at different times during our hike. It was nice to get to the top of the highest peak in Colorado. TJ Burr, Author of "Rocky Mountain Adventure Collection" available through www.bn.com.

Great time and a pretty long day, snow shoe on, snow shoes off. Almost proposed to my exgirlfriend on that summit, WHEW that was close!

xskier77Route Climbed: Halfmoon Trailhead Date Climbed: Sometime between 1996-1998  Sucess!

This was my first fourteener. I went solo and took 4 hours to summit and 3 hours to get back to the car. I must've done this hike in the late summer during the week because I don't recall seeing a single person and the photos I have show a decent amount of snow on surrounding mountains.

Great views, great weather. Very popular and crowded due to its status as highest in colorado.

2 inches of snow at 10,500' about 6" at the summit. Beautiful views. This could be a very enjoyable winter ski trip. Easy walk for such a big mountain.

Nice day - yes, a hailstorm, a little rain, a little clouds, a little sun, but this is Colroado after all. Easy climb to a crowded top - nice way to end the summer.

A flatlander Hoosier summits his first 14er, accompanied by college-student son. Next to watching his birth, it's the neatest thing I've ever done. This year, it's Mt. Massive. I figure at this rate, I'll do all Colorado's 14ers by age 103.

nobozosRoute Climbed: South Elbert to summit Date Climbed: July 14, 2001  Sucess!
This was a nice climb for my family, including my wife (44), son (18) and daughter (15). We climbed via the south approach from Twin Lakes, which supposedly is more strenuous than the traditional northeast and southeast ridge approaches, but we found it manageable. Our son, who is athletic, skipped up and down the trail, but our daughter was about at her limit for her first 14teener. We also did not encounter any other climbers on the south approach before reaching the summit. The solitude was appreciated. On the climb we saw a red fox, and also a number of ptarmagin which aggressively guarded their newly hatched chicks.

This is a very easy route and just about anyone in good health can reach the summit.

I have very much enjoyed my first Fourteener today. Sort of surprised myself. I had not planned to hike it all the way. Departing early made it all happen. The next time I'll travel even lighter and pack some chocolate and ear covers. Yes, ear cover make sense up high even on a sunny day!

Pikes Peak is next!

Excellent hike on a clear day following about 3 days of rain. Stayed in Leadville for about 24 hours prior to the hike and had no problems with the altitude. Check out my web page for pictures from the trip:
