| As Roach states " a long hike"... A pleasant walk in the woods followed by an uphill grind. A lot of fun! | ||

| Quite a distinctive mountain--I like it! Climbed with Aaron Johnson up the steep west slopes (but a good, easy trail), which proved to get us to the summit relatively quickly, but nothing like how fast we descended the wonderful scree slopes a bit further north on the same side! What a wonderful day! | ||

| Climber with 2 brothers and a friend. West Slopes route was short and sweet. A new trail was being built last summer. | ||

| this route, contrary to dawson's description, does NOT avoid heinous scree. in fact it defines it. | ||

| After hopping over 3 summits to get there, our group finally stood on the main summit after a very cold and windy ascent. A quick descent down the snow fields made up for it, though. Pretty good workout, I'd say. | ||

| This is simply the ONLY way one should climb Massive. How else can one experience the massiveness of Massive unless you walk along all its massive summits? Views from the ascent up to North Massive almost brought me to tears. Do this hike NOW! | ||

| We kicked steps into a snowslope to reach the ridge west of "North Massive." We summitted that peak, and continued the circle tour to Massive's summit. A trip report is available here. | ||

| esugi | Route Climbed: From the North Halfmoon Creek Trailhead Date Climbed: October 2002 ![]() | |
| What an enjoyable climb. There was just enough snow from earlier dump that this "hike" in the summer felt like a "climb" this particular day. Good boots and ice axes were used. Started from North Halfmoon Creek Trailhead and the entire route is described here: http://www.14ers.com/photos/MtMassive/p_mtmassive_route1.html | ||

| I spent a little bit of time trying to decide which peak was highest. I finally decided on the one at N39.18753 W106.47562 (WGS 84). It appears slightly higher than the one at N39.18588 W106.47505. | ||

| Long but fun. That was a lot of time to spend above 14k. A little chilly with the wind but otherwise a nice day. The class 3 section between North Massive and Massive Green was the highlight. | ||

| Very enjoyable climb. I found this one to be prettier than nearby Elbert, depsite the longer length (also less crowded, had summit to ourselves). | ||

| notracks | Route Climbed: Native Lake Trailhead Date Climbed: September 2002 ![]() | |
| This was an overnight ascent. We started from the Native lake trailhead. Spent the night at Native Lake. The folowing day we did a little tour du Massive. We reached Massive through the ridge that starts right from the summit Eastward. Then we went over Massive Green, North Massive, Point 14169, enjoyed the fresh snow on the glacier and climbed down all the way back to the trailhead. It was a very, very long day. Especially after you are done with the peak and have to hike out for 2-3 more hours with the heavy backpacks on. | ||

| charles97 | Route Climbed: Mount Massive Trail, down back side. Date Climbed: July 2, 2003 ![]() | |
| Wow this was a tough hike, not because of the ascent, but because silly me wanted to bag North Massive and go down the backside on the same day. As it was we went up when there was quite a bit of snow still, but the main trail to the summit was well worn and the patches of snow didn't present a problem. I think it took us about 3.5 hours to get to the summit from the main trailhead. However, we (I should say I) wanted to bag North Massive too, and went across the ridge part way. We made it as far as the last saddle, but were running late, so decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Then we "surfed" down the back side where there's about a 1000-ft scree covered slope. Nasty. Wore me out. Then we lost the trail and there were no other hikers on that side of the hill at all. Then we met some formidable snow banks. At one point we ended up sliding down a pretty steep snow bank on our butts, screaming obscenities the whole way. Oh well, it was all a good day because we survived (ragged as we were at the end). #20, only 34 to go. | ||

| Great day for a hike! Windy above timberline, partly cloudy all the way up which made it easier then hiking under full sun. Interesting portion of climb before reaching the summit with breathtaking views, needless to say! Overall much prettier to hike then Elbert. Very windy on the top, hold on to your hats! We were low of drinks even we had packed plenty. Got to the summit sort of dehydrated. Filled up a bottle with snow which helped us make it back. Grateful for that snow! Had attempted this mountain twice in the past year but never reached the summit because of changes in the weather. Felt good to have finally made it. Now I can plan another Fourteener and pack MORE WATER! | ||
