DundeelSunshine in the Rainforest  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 17, 2009

Fantastic mountain. We had perfect weather for the whole trip. Used standard route via Blue Glacier, Snow Dome, Crystal Pass. Accessed the East Face Sidewalk from the north side. Scrambled the SE corner to the summit. Rapped back to the Sidewalk. The Blue was all ice with no hidden hazards but heavily broken up with lots of meltwater holes. Ascent to the Snow Dome was mostly ice. The Snow Dome has many large crevasses and some sketchy snow bridges.

We were still on the moraine when darkness caught up with us. One team member stumbled and sprained an ankle, making for a long and painful hike out.

Hot as Hell...and the bugs were a real drag. Summit day was long but that just gave me more time to take in the beauty. Really cool climb. Next time I'd like to try earlier in the season.

Climbed with Chris "The Specialist" Umphres and Dr. Landon Kanner. Up and down in three and a half days. There was an abundance of snow on the glacier which allowed us to cross the bergshrund and ascend the direct route (which was around 40 degress or so.) We shoved in a pickett on the way down. We couldn't locate the 4th class route to the top. So, we climbed a route on the west side which felt like a 5.4 or so. Wish I had brought more than two cams. (never did find any nut placements, tri-cams would have been nice though.) No views from the top as it was sleeting and cloudy. A real adventure! Loved it!

Gorgeous weather hiking in the t-shirt! Last third of the hike in the snow up to 3 feet still warm enough for the t-shirt.

justingBy the blue glacier...

...only to the false summit though. The rainforest felt like being on another continent.

First up in 2001, so wet on the way out my wife’s feet were infected for the following 3 months as we backpacked Europe. She still harasses me to this day about it. She didn't even summit as I left her at basecamp because she was tired from the hike in. She hates this mountain...I loved it! Maps and pics at http://www.willhiteweb.com/index_077.htm

Hiked Hoh River fast and light, bivy below the fantastic Blue Glacier, easy crossing and little rocky summit that looked harder than it was. 44 mile round trip. Now that's climbing!

TheBootfitterBlue Glacier -- Will have to return!
Date Climbed: Jul 26, 2008

Started hiking Thu @ 8PM. Made it to OGS camp shortly after 11PM. Glacier Meadows by mid-afternoon Fri. Started the climb Sat @ 2AM. After a few snafus, we reached the top of Snow Dome, where it was spitting rain/sleet. With ~20M visibility, we couldn't make out a boot path, but navigated our way through several crevasses toward Crystal Pass. By 9AM, we found ourselves a couple hundred feet above and a couple hundred meters west of Crystal Pass. Given the late hour, poor visibility & weather, tiredness of one team member, and the fact that none of us felt like leading the summit block in these conditions anyway, we turned back. Packed up camp and made it to 5 Mi Is by ~9PM. Hiked through a light rain Sun AM back to car. Fun trip! Spectacular scenery (below the clouds, anyway!)

Will definitely return!

Weather was terrible; drizzle and 0 visibility, still managed to summit despite not being able to see anything the whole way up. Went up the west side of the summit.

Did it quick, just 3 days via Hoh River Trail. The route is amazing, first the rainforest, and then lots of glacier. Do this peak!! Take 4 days, 2 up to high camp, 1 to the summit, 1 down.

We climbed starting from the North Fork of the Quinault and up the Elwah basin. We followed the original summit route up the Humes and across the the Hoh glacier and then up the blue. This was part of a 30 day trip that ended at the Solduck hot springs. Incredible adventure.

RedwicHoh River Trail
Date Climbed: Jul 27, 2001

In July 2001, I hiked up the Hoh River Trail and beyond Glacier Meadows. But I didn't have much glacier-travel gear, because this was before I was really interested in summiting and highpointing. I did reach the Blue Glacier, but turned around when a crevasse opened up in front of me. I was very out of shape at the time, and determined to hike as fast as I could; I took a 60-lb. backpack and hiked 40+ miles roundtrip in two days! It was awesome! Highly recommended trail.

Tough climb in a white out on the summit. 14 hour summit day from Glacier Meadows. I'm obviously no trail runner like Pantilat. Total climbing time over 5 days was about 35 hours and only one of us had a broken leg.

ridgegirlRain and more rain!  Sucess!

Climbed it with a group of Boy Scouts which made the trip interesting. It rained and rained but we finally got a small window after a couple days. We hiked back out in one day because we were so tired of the rain. The trail out was completely washed out in some places. Beautiful mountain!

One of the best experiences in the PNW, and perhaps the best alpine setting in the region. An all time favorite.

First time on glacier. Any nightime apprehension evaporated once on the flats of the Blue glacier. The upper mountain had beautiful cracks everywhere (of course we avoided them) and gave me my first taste of alpine living. I was workin at Sol Duc at the time so we approached from by dropping into the Hoh valley from near the High Divide. Made for a dreaded slog back up to the Divide after summiting the previous day. Completely knackered by the time we reached the car, but pushing it is what makes a trip so memoreable sometimes. Car to car in three days.
