| Started late afternoon on Tuesday and reached the top an hour before sunset, which was a great sight, and started down late the next morning. On the way down, I almost walked into a pair of mountain goats. | ||

| On the mountain again this weekend. The snow is melting out fast. Took the Backbone trail down this time, then down the fire road back to Manker Flats. | ||

| Beautiful day on the mountain. Great snow conditions above 8500 ft. Incoming clouds in the afternoon created the most awesome scenery. | ||

| Attempted to summit the day before, but had to turn around because the sky was flashing constantly as the lightning bolts were closing upon us fast. Ended up waiting out the storm overnight which left lots of fresh powder. Made going up the Bowl primary route of choice. Second attempt was a charm. Sprinkling snow and fast rolling fog throughout the ascent and descent. | ||

| Had a great day at the mountain. While away hikining, somebody broke in my car parked at Guffy Campground and stole all cloths and a sleeping bag. At least the car was a rental... | ||

| Having bagged several of the major peaks in Southern California, Mt. Baldy offers the most spectacular views. On our first visit to the summit the previous year, my brother and I could see not only Catalina Island but San Clemente Island as well. We could also see Gorgonio, Jacinto, Palomar, Santiago, Baden-Powell, Wilson, the Tehachapis, the entire high desert, the Antelope Valley and much more. | ||

| Great day with nice weather. Very little snow. Encountered a little snow and ice coming out of the bowl, but other than that just small patches here and there. No need for crampons or ice axe at this time. Windy and cold at the top and down the backbone. | ||

| A beautiful day on the mountain with some strong and cold winds at the top, but things couldn't have been too bad, as I met a climber on the summit nattily attired in hiking shorts. Also met about thirty other folks and seven or so dogs. There is very little snow on Baldy this year – only some big patches on the slopes climbing out of Baldy Bowl. The big storms of late December 2002, blew over and destroyed the outhouse at the Sierra Club Ski Hut. I suspect there will be a project to rebuild it this spring. (I heard about the Columbia tragedy from another hiker near the top, we hadn't listened to the radio during the drive to the mountain and were oblivious to the days sad events). | ||

| 43moon | Route Climbed: Manker Flats to Baldy Summit Date Climbed: January 25, 2003 ![]() | |
| It was an amazing day today. It was difficult to believe that it was January. We didn't encounter any snow until crossing the bowl. The snow wasn't too bad going up (I didn't bring my snowshoes). We summited at about 3pm. The temperature on the summit was about 40 degrees. The winds were very strong. The temperature was dropping on our way down. As a result, the snow was turning to ice. It made it difficult to walk on the trail. We had to go off-trail to avoid slipping. Crampons would not have hurt. We encountered a few adventurous people that were going to spend the night. | ||

| On the Christmas Eve day of 2002, Michael Gordon, Joe LeMay, Babu Sherpa Long Chen and I, all of us from SCMA, hiked up the central bowl from San Antonio hut. We found some soft snow, breakable crust, frozen snow, touches of hard ice and steep terrain up the gully. Beautiful, cloudy day in Southern California and nobody else on the mountain. Had very "interesting" descent down the bowl without ice axes and crampons. A bit sporting, even for very experienced group of alpinists. My 131st time on the top. | ||

| Attempted baldy a month ago via the blue ridge trail and failed to make it. last time stoped at pine mountain and turned around. this time i decided to take a more direct route. The baldy bowl trail was steeper than i had expected and my wife didn't let me forget about that. sure is a nice feeling to get to the top. Beutiful day, lovely skies and views for miles. | ||

| asmrz | Route Climbed: Various Date Climbed: Between 1973 and 2002 ![]() | |
| My home Summit Logs indicate, that I climbed Mt.Baldy some 127 times between 1973 and 2002. Some trips I remember, in 1983, Miguel Carmona and I climbed the South Ridge to the summit, slept there, then did the traverse of the 3 "T" peaks to Ice House Canyon and from there climbed Ontario Peak and back to car. This was overnight trip with snow on the ground in late December. It was some 10,000 feet of elevation gain and 27 miles of snow hiking. In December of 1999, in incredible wind and snow storm (60mph?), Miguel and I crawled on all four to the summit, only to see two other guys do the same. Michael Gordon (see the Baldy Main Page photo) and Johny (Downtown) Brown were the other insane people on the summit that day. We climbed the mountain in just over two hours via San Antonio Hut in 1994, with 50 lbs packs, preparing for Himalayan Expedition. That hill is an incredible training ground for all of us in Southern California. Love it! | ||

| The Bear Canyon route is the most strenuous and arguably the most rewarding. An excellent route to measure your personal ascent capabilities in terms of elevation gain per hour. | ||
